Have you ever thought that what you are doing today can change your kid’s future?

You know how passionate I am about teaching our younger generation that there are other options besides college to make a living and change the world.

I had no clue that showing my girls how to set up their own business would be so empowering for them.  My original goal was to get them out of bed before 10 am on Saturday mornings. Well, long story short, business building worked to get them up and going AND they made 6 figures along the way.  Not too shabby, right?

Learning about other options besides college.

Just a few weeks ago, Russell Brunson asked my daughter, Makayla to stand on stage in front of 5,500 people and talk about her journey of building a business.  Alongside her were 3 other kid entrepreneurs talking about what they were building too.

Want to know what they all had in common?

They saw how building a business changes and impacts lives, and also makes them money along the way.

The Event That Changed It All For Ayelet

One of the gals up there, Ayelet Shipley admitted that just 7 months ago, she didn’t even consider building a business.  She wanted to go to school and get a job and help people one on one.

But boy oh boy did that quickly change quickly when her parents took her to a conference and she heard the phrase: “What if I told you this could impact 100 people.”

In a matter of months after learning about how businesses serve people, she immediately got to work and launched a podcast, ebook, and more so that she could reach more people, faster.

In today’s How to Sell Online podcast, I brought you in Ayelet so you can hear what her parents did AND didn’t do to help her see this newfound calling of serving people and building a business around it.

If you have a kid who is looking to go down the path of entrepreneurship or wondering if it’s right for them and you just aren’t sure of how to handle or support it, then this episode is for you.

The journey of Ayelet Shipley is fascinating in how she found the path less traveled – aka entrepreneurship.

When She Found Options Besides College

Ayelet wasn’t a natural-born entrepreneur. Heck, she didn’t have any thought of being an entrepreneur until just 7 months ago nor did she realize that her dad had actually been an entrepreneur his whole life.

She was actually in grad school getting her Masters’s degree in Clinical Social Work when her dad reached out and convinced her to go to the Unlock The Secrets live event hosted by Clickfunnels. Before heading out to Denver, where the event was held, she thought that the path of her life was paved and she knew exactly what she was going to be doing.

One of the first people that she encountered at the event was Ryan Lee of CashFlow Tactics and in just a few minutes her eyes were opened to a whole new opportunity in life.

You see, Ayelet had been secretly battling anxiety and depression for the past 10 years. While she was talking with Ryan, he shared that he was really there for his 12-year-old daughter who wants to impact the world by helping people with anxiety and depression.

That’s when a light bulb went off in her head.

She realized she had this amazing message and skill set that could help impact so many people. Her world had just changed. She went from thinking her impact could only be one-to-one to realizing that she could use her message, skills, and knowledge to impact people at scale by using the power of the internet.

The Path To Entrepreneurship

Before she had stepped foot outside of the conference, she knew that her new path in life involved becoming an entrepreneur. In order to have an infinite impact and not just help people one-on-one and make $40,000 per year, she would have to take a different path than what was taught in school.

But when she got home to New York City, reality set in. She was no longer surrounded by the motivated, like-minded people that filled the conference halls. She was around her normal friend group and none of them were doing anything like this.

This didn’t slow her down though, she came home and quickly launched her podcast, Get Out of Bed, Get Out of Your Head

Then the podcast about helping people with their anxiety became a source of personal anxiety when Ayelet’s podcast coach told her she needed to start doing Facebook Lives to begin driving traffic to the podcast. According to her, this was a hard no – at least until he came back with one very powerful statement:

What if I told you this could impact 100 people?

That one statement allowed Ayelet to crush her fear and step into this new role because she knew that people needed her message.

This doesn’t just apply to people with a message like Ayelet. There are so many of you with online stores that are selling products that people need. Could your impact on the world through your products be greater if you crushed your own internal fears?

Ask yourself this…

If I did _________, more people would experience my products and their life would be better because of it.

Now, go do that thing!

Tips on Starting a Business for the Younger Generation

Since Ayelet’s family was so supportive of her venturing into the world of entrepreneurship, I asked her what advice she would give to parents who have kids – or to 20-somethings looking for an alternative path.

For Ayelet, she said the biggest things were when her parents…

  • Stepped back and let her make decisions (even if they knew it wasn’t the best)
  • Was there for her when she needed support and direction
  • And had an open mind when she told them about this new direction she wanted to go in

One of my favorite things, when we were having this conversation though, was around her advice to anyone starting.

“Take massive imperfect action because each thing that you do will teach you something.”

I absolutely loved her response to this! So good!

Just get out there and start! The chances are it won’t be great in the beginning but you’ll learn with each step that you take. And the further along you get in your journey the better it will become.
