Can running a business help you heal? Help you navigate the road from tragedy to triumph? Or help a single mom provide for her family?  I recently had the chance to sit down with Mae and her daughter Izy of 923byDesign. These two ladies have quickly become two of my favorite people—and they are entrepreneurs who tackled those tough questions and a mom and daughter who inspired me with their answers to those very questions.

This is definitely an “ICan Conversation” video that you’re going to want to watch—especially if you’re dealing with tough things. What they share could absolutely change your perspective and give you hope during a hard time.

As a mother and sister myself, I cannot imagine what losing a child must have been like for Mae. Or what losing a brother was like for Izy and Cash. Their outlook, faith, and focus are absolutely remarkable.

Here are a few of my takeaways from our interview:

“The first thing I had to do was change my mindset. I had to get over this idea, this wrong way of thinking that it wasn’t going to work. The lies that I hear in my head that it wasn’t going to be okay.”

Whether it comes to starting a business or coping with a personal tragedy, having the right mindset is a must. Mae had to change her way of thinking when it came to starting her business 923byDesign. To overcome those nagging doubts she wouldn’t—couldn’t—be successful. And when it came to navigating heartache, her mindset had to be one of moving forward in a way that honored her son’s life.

“Sometimes fear disguises itself as being responsible and will cause you to miss opportunities in your life.”

THIS IS BRILLIANT!!! There are times when things don’t make sense on paper and absolutely fly in the face of logic, but you need to do it anyway. Investing the time and money it would take for four people to attend ClanCON 2019 seemed like a fiscal fail. Instead, it was a turning point for their family and their business.

“Dealing with grief is like a riptide…You either allow yourself to go through it and come out the other side, or you fight it and lay down and drown.”

Mae, Izy, and Cash had two choices in life—and so do all of us. We can let the challenges and life consume you, or you can find purpose in your journey. This family chose to find purpose in working together to create something that would change their financial future while honoring Logan’s life.

“The more we put our hands to things, and the more we stuck with things and had consistency, we did better. It was a big faith-building thing, too.”

Faith is a big part of this sweet family’s life—and I love it because it’s a big part of mine, too. But as Izy shared, they put their faith to work and are making the most of their talents as they do it. They are successfully selling products on 923byDesign that sooooo many people would say is saturated. I mean, they started a tee-shirt business, right? But you know what? They’ve carved a perfect niche for themselves with one-of-a-kind artisan work, small-batch printing, and AMAZING customer service. Trust me: I’ve worked with them personally and they have blown me away, time after time, with what they do.

Okay, and I’d be crazy if I didn’t close this post about how to go from tragedy to triumph every single day and finding healing and hope in the most difficult times.  This is what Mae shared about Logan’s loss and their family’s philosophy:

“We’re not going to give up. We’re not going to lay down. We’re not going to be miserable. We’re going to live every day to the fullest, honoring his memory, doing hard things in his memory. That kid did hard things. He loved people, so completely and had such an impact. And we want to have that impact too. How are we going to have an impact on people if we’re broke and sad and hiding in the house? We can’t.”

Mae, Izy, and Cash are truly amazing, aren’t they?
