Have you ever heard of the phrases… Shiny object syndrome? Chasing the squirrel? Glitter catching?
I’m raising my hand to all three as I know them up close and personal. Holler out loud if you are with me on these.
So What is Shiny Object Syndrome?
It feels a little something like this…you open your laptop to work on that big project then 15 minutes later you’re somehow reading an article on the latest Instagram growth strategy and soon find yourself buying products to disinfect your house on Amazon and you don’t even know how you got there?
It’s like we do anything and everything except the thing that we need to be doing.
So, why do we do this to ourselves?!
It’s our brain’s fault. Yes, our brain finds pleasure in new and exciting things and that big project you’ve been working on for the past 3-months isn’t that exciting anymore.
The second our brain sees someone commenting on our IG post or a cool new article a friend shared – we pivot and dive into that other thing, trying to find all the juicy details!
All that bouncing around to find the latest and the greatest is killing productivity. Killing your time and killing those sales that should be putting money in your pocket!
SO today’s podcast helps get you on the road to crushing shiny object syndrome. This is something that I’ve had to personally attack head-on.
Building 4 online brag worthy businesses while listening to the timer of the oven go off, kids wrestling in the background, and notifications dinging in at all times of the day…can make it feel like my own personal zoo.
Want the tools to help you cross the things off the list that are going to propel you forward?
If you’re ready to overcome shiny object syndrome and start living your Because I Can Life, then you’ve got to understand this simple 3-part method to block the chaos and distractions.
Why You Should Avoid Shiny Object Syndrome
You might go blind.
Figuratively of course. What I mean is, you might lose sight of your original vision. You’ve got goals in your business but if you are constantly pivoting from one idea or product to another, how can you ever expect to make real progress?
You’ll never complete any projects.
If you are constantly chasing the next million-dollar product idea, hip new social media platform, or project management tool, then the items on your project list will never get checked off. Well, they may get crossed off, but only because you’ve got some new project now based on the latest rabbit hole that you’ve got pulled down.
You burn through your cash.
You probably started your online business because you needed the money. So, why do so many of us blow what we make on stuff we don’t need? Whether it’s monthly subscriptions to tools you don’t use or training courses that are supposed to solve all your problems, a lot of us burn through money on things that aren’t actually moving the business forward.
You drive your family crazy.
If you are constantly searching for the next best thing then you’ll not only drive yourself crazy, you’ll start to drive your family crazy as well.
Our Brain & Shiny Object Syndrome Are BFF’s
Do you ever crack open your laptop and go to Google something only to realize 5 minutes later that you are reading about something that has nothing to do with your original reason for even opening up the computer in the first place? Yea, I get it – one minute I’m looking for the answer to a specific question and the next minute I’m reading about the latest and greatest Instagram growth strategy.
We end up doing anything and everything except the thing that we need to be doing.
So, why do we do this to ourselves?!
It’s because our brain finds stimulation in new things and it lights up the pleasure centers. Our brain is super powerful and it’s always looking for ways to keep us happy and safe. Let’s face it, sitting down to do things like write that new email sequence isn’t the most joyful activity. So, when we are presented with new and interesting things – someone commenting on your IG post or a cool new article your friend shared – we often pivot and dive into that other thing.
A 3-hour task ends up taking you 3-days because you are constantly looking for something new and more exciting. Your brain has other objectives that sometimes aren’t inline with yours. Once you understand this, you can start to take control of it and avoid putting yourself in these situations.
Social Media Getting In The Way
Have you ever thought why they call it a Facebook feed, an Instagram feed, or a Twitter feed?
It’s because it feeds your brain and it’s the ultimate shiny object.
Some of the smartest people in the world work at companies like Facebook and their goal is to keep you on their platform for as long as possible. They’ve got really really good at it. Like I mentioned above, when we are presented with new information our brain gets a little high. That’s why the social media feed makes us act like little junkies trying to get a fix. They’ve designed it to feed us with information that is going to excite our brains and keep us coming back – even when we don’t want to.
According to TechJury, the average user spends 2 hours and 33 minutes on social media each day.
How much time did you spend on social media last week?
Seriously, go check. You might be shocked.
Overcoming Shiny Object Syndrome
Have you noticed that the acronym for Shiny Object Syndrome is SOS? Usually, this means “help” but today we are coming up with a new meaning that will help you take control of the madness.
From now on, SOS is going to stand for Scream Out & Step Away.
Here’s how this is going to work…
No, I don’t want you to literally scream. What I want you to do is be able to avoid the noise so you can hear when the universe is screaming at you.
A few years ago, I would go to a conference and take pages and pages of notes and leave with the intention of implementing a million new things into my business. Soon after, the overwhelm would kick in and none of those things on my to-do list would get accomplished. Sound familiar?
So, what I started to do at these conferences was not taking any notes when someone was speaking. Instead, I would wait until their presentation was over then I’d jot down the 1-2 key things from there presentation. In the end, I would have a single page of solid ideas and concepts, not pages and pages.
But the real change came from what I did once I got home. I didn’t hit the ground running with this page of awesome ideas. Nope. I kept moving forward with my existing goals and I waited for the universe to SCREAM at me when something that I learned needed to be implemented.
Because I didn’t have a million ideas I was juggling and implementing in my business, I had the mental clarity to listen for when the universe was screaming at me.
Listen more, act less. It might sound backward but this can be so powerful!
Out with new in with the old.
Yup, you read that right. It’s a bit different than the normal saying but let me explain. So many of us are running from one thing to the next because of a fear-of-missing-out. We think that if we aren’t doing the latest and greatest thing, then we’ll get left behind.
This is especially true when it comes to social media. In fact, I Googled “social media platforms” and found a list of 50 active platforms. I only knew 11 of them! Could you imagine if I tried to be on all of these platforms?! I’d never get anything done in my business and most of it would be for nothing because the platforms will fail.
Stick with the tried and true.
Build on things that are proven – email, influencers, community, branding, etc.
Will you feel some FOMO? Yup! But that’s ok because we are building, long-term, sustainable businesses for our families – not chasing a quick dollar.
Maybe the most important part of our redefinition of SOS is the final piece – Step Away.
If you want to hear this last piece and to finally kick Shiny Object Syndrome to the curb, you’ve got to click play above or click here to listen on your favorite podcast app.
Make this month the month that you commit to Scream Out & Step Away!

Absolutely incredible podcast. Thank you ladies for being real, clear and motivating. So empowering. A true testimonial to “Because I Can!”
- Scaryby irenesq from United States
Yup! Alison is scary...not in a bad way though. Its all in a good way. Why? Well, first of, I think Alison is not only an e-commerce expert but also has a psychic ability. I am only on the fifth episode of her podcast, and listening to it made me think like, “how does she know what I’m thinking?” All the fears and self doubts and negativity. She talks about life experiences that are relatable. Somehow whenever I listen to her, she connects with me like as if she was talking to me. I just love her and really blessed to have found her and be part of her clan. Thank you Alison!

Alison is the real deal! She’s real as she inspires you to reach your best life. She gives you glimpses into how she has made multi dollar million businesses. Alison was called to serve others to help others reach the dreams we have always wanted to achieve. She inspires to help us Rise Up to what God wants us to become! It just keeps getting better and better! Wow! Today’s episode in February is amazing! Literally I sell wholesale and know what it takes. But now I’m wanting to really create more retail sales and I have since being in your program! Loved the episode that you did of Puerto Rico and why you moved. I loved how you testified of how God works in our lives and if we trust him we can do anything. Thanks for being a light and a mentor to me. It just keeps getting better and better! Especially today about making offers! Sometimes we don’t always think of the little things it make offers daily to weekly. I know I can amp up my orders and I will be digging deep this week!

I love this podcast so much-it is my favourite I’ve found among all the business podcasts. It’s targeted at women who are at home with kids or in a job dreaming of running their own business and making more money. Alison is really relatable, clear and supportive in her advice & delivery and there are tons of good nuggets here for any aspiring or active mumpreneur.
- Inspirationalby Greenwichound from United Kingdom
Some of things that Alison discusses in her podcast are really simple. But sometimes you need it laid out in these terms for it to just go in. And go in it does. Meaning you leave each episode full of confidence and aspiration with a check list of to do’s or things to try out. She shares information bombs that others in her position would never share (fear of giving away their secret sauce) and every step of the way you feel like she’s championing your specific journey. She is golden and this show should be in the library of everyone thinking or currently doing Ecommerce. Keep it up Alison! X

Loved this episode and how broken down and step by step the details were. Question for you: How do you decide on a business name and shop for an e-commerce store if you don’t have a niche? Or do you only recommend opening a store for those who do? In the beginning, you sold a lot of random things that didn’t relate to each other, so did you use third party selling websites to sell or did you start your own store and how do you do that without a specific product or niche?

- Hopeful:)by Polka. Lover from United States
So far I’m really excited about this podcast....and hoping it doesn’t all lead to what so many other podcasts I’ve listened to have, which is “I’ll tell you just enough to get you excited and start to believe you can do it, but to really start to change your life it’s time to pay for the membership/course and if you can’t afford it that’s just an excuse”. I’ve become a bit of a pessimist in the self-improvement journey while trying so hard to get started but not having much cash to do so. I’m that mom stuck living credit card payment to credit card payment which doesn’t exactly leave money to get started. I’m hoping this podcast is what I’ve been searching for to guide me on how to finally get something going that will bring hope and real change for my future. I love Allison and I have faith that she’s who can help me change my life!♥️

Against her norm of staying out of the spotlight and working behind the scenes Alison pushed past her fears of putting her face out there to follow her inner drive to teach others how she has been uber successful in several online businesses. She is still active in maintaining several online businesses and has taught me (and thousands more) how to build our own businesses. She is unselfish and wants success for all (and teaches how to do it without going into debt!). She gives so much to help others build their own dreams. Alison is the first mentor that I have found that doesn't hold back in sharing each piece to the complicated puzzle of successful business practices from idea to distribution to customer care. She doesn't promise magical overnight success- but gives you the keys you need and reminds you that your success depends on your dedication and hard work. I can't wait to see what her future episodes bring. Thanks Alison, for overdelivering yet again.

- Info needs to be consistentby joness59 from United States
I missed that you mentioned the link to your bundle at the beginning of the podcast. At the end you mentioned the site is becauseicanlife.com/bundle. This is an invalid URL. I spent time trying to figure out the link until I saw it posted in the notes of your podcast. My feedback is to make sure the info you provide is consistent. Other than that it was a real good podcast. Hope this was helpful. Stephen Jones (your old Boise neighbor)

- All Entrepreneurs Must Hear Thisby seesnow99 from United States
I’ve been following Alison for a while now. I bought into her 0-100K system. My store is up & running thanks to her & a lot of hard work. If you want to have an e-commerce business & have the best support team ever, look no further. I’ve done tons of webinars & online research. Nothing compares to what I have learned from Alison. Her online Facebook group is nothing short of phenomenal. You can post your struggle & ask for help. Five hours later, you come back to loads of encouraging posts from fellow “clanners” who have been there & they’re offering helpful advice. I have been in her course since May 2018 & have watched her course get better & better. That’s because she’s constantly adding to it. The best part about all of this is that Alison is genuine. She really wants to see her students succeed. This podcast is just another way to encourage us & all of you at the same time. I’ve met her in person more than once & her sincerity is more than evident. Sit back & enjoy the podcast! Better yet, take that jump & come join us in the Because I Can Clan!

So happy Alison has launched this podcast. So refreshing to find parent entrepreneurs who are crushing it in business but at the same time being REAL, TRANSPARENT, and VULNERABLE about what it's really like to build a business with a family (without sacrificing the family)! So many families out there are struggling working 9-5 or more and still unable to provide for their families. - Alison Prince WALKS THE WALK Like No Other Person I Knowby Supreme Dragon Slayer 69 from United States
Full Disclosure. I met Alison and her amazing family just a few years ago and in that time I have witnessed an incredibly humble person step into even more of her greatness. This is someone who chases Impact over Significance in everything she does. In a world where most “big marketing gurus” who just yell louder to be heard and rely mostly on manufacturing celebrity to become a house hold name... Alison has been actually walking the walk for decades. She is family focused. She is heart centered. But make no mistake. She is one of the most BRILLIANT Marketers and Business Builders in the world. She had proven herself time and time again on her multiple businesses in multiple niches. All. From. The. Ground. Up. So yes. I know her. Which makes me qualified to write this review bc if you do have an opportunity to ever meet her in real life, feel good knowing she is the same in real life as she is on this podcast. Dave

- So happy Alison finally is releasing a podcast!by Arushi-315 from United States
So ready to listen to all these episodes.
Most of us still have a scarcity mentality. So anything new, shiny grabs our attention, causes us to spin in circles, then wait through the over-abundance of information until we're left in a heap wondering why nothing, nothing is getting accomplished. The bottomline is new information is exciting and it gives your brain a surge of feel-good dopamine and it can actually become addictive.
Hey, you are listening to the Because I Can Life podcast, where we believe we can decide our own income, choose happiness, kick fear in the teeth, and never, ever stop. Why? Because we can. I'm your host Alison J. Prince and I went from being a junior high science teacher to building four online multi-million dollar businesses, with four kids, at my feet. Each week, I'm bringing you real conversations that have led me as well as other experts to step into our dream online business lifestyle so that you can get the answers you need to craft your Because I Can life as well. Take that first step and commit now to your Because I Can life by downloading your free personal bundle at alisonjprince.com/bundle.
Good morning. I'm sitting here with my Makayla and we just want to tell you: Thank you. So we posted on Instagram that we didn't want to pay $15 for the oatmeal at the hotel we were staying with. So you guys gave us some ideas. We ordered some oats from the grocery store, had it delivered, and then we're actually using the coffee maker or getting the hot water, and then pouring it into our oatmeal. So thank you for that tip. We're loving this oatmeal this morning. We appreciate you guys. Okay, so to kick off today's podcast, I want to play a game. So raise your hand if any of these next three phrases could describe how you work: number one, shiny object syndrome, number two, chasing the squirrel, and number three, glitter catching. If you raise your hand at any of these, don't feel bad. I can actually raise my hand with all three of these phrases. In fact, if chasing squirrels were an Olympic event, I would bring home the gold medal. Here's the thing though. These names sound kind of cute, right? But the truth is, they're syndromes and they can wreak havoc on your life, particularly if you are trying to start a business. If you don't stop trying to catch squirrels and glitter all the time, here's a few things that can happen. Number one, you go blind, okay? Not actually, but it does become very easy for you to lose sight of your original vision. The second one, it never ends, your project that is. I can tell you personally that completing projects is next to impossible when you're always chasing after the latest greatest tool, social media platform, product, etc. Of course, the bare problem within this problem is that you chase after the newest thing and never complete the older thing. You never see any substantial results after your initial efforts. Eventually, you interpret this lack of results as a lack of ability on your part. And maybe you even throw the towel in altogether. The third one, you burn through the cash. Now, most people I know who tried to start a business online do so because they really needed to earn some extra money. But I've known people him Okay, maybe he spent a little money over here on this monthly subscription to have some must-have tool that the only use for two weeks and a little money over there to have someone build a website they never market and a little over here to buy yet another program because it's going to be the one that solves all their problems. You get the point - jumping from one ship to the next. When all of those ships have an entry fee that can really add up the next one and you drive your family crazy. You know you get when you chase a lot of squirrels, you get nuts as in you drive yourself and your family nuts. We are constantly in a state of searching searching for the answers and we never commit to one path, one project one strategy and we can become a bit squirrely ourselves, unhinged and angered and uneasy to be around. If not for yourself, stop the madness for your family. And yes, this message has been approved by my children. Now, if only shiny object syndrome or a superpower that would be so cool, right? If you knew me when I started my first online business, you would have witnessed someone who truly had the gift for chasing all the shiny things. Once I became aware of the fact that I had a problem, I didn't really want to confront the problem because confrontation, and self-reflection can sometimes be painful. Now, it would have been so much easier to pretend that my shiny object syndrome was a superpower. And I could somehow use it for good. You know, I could help people all over the world find their keys in shiny, spare change, right. But sadly, my career is a superhero power it was never to be. And if I wanted a career as an entrepreneur, I was going to have to find out how to harness my powers and use them for good. And today, I want to share with you the tools that will help you harness your own shiny glitter squirrel catching superhero powers. The first thing that I want you to do though, is look at your to-do list or imagine in your head if you're away from it. Is it really long, or is it so short, because you've been too busy on all the other important tasks to write down all the things that you really need to do? Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar to you. Whenever you look at your to-do list, you instantly feel a bit overwhelmed. So instead of tackling all the things that really needs to get done, you instead begin looking for information online that will somehow help you move forward as though someone will have the answer to all your questions. So you start with a quick Google search and soon find yourself on Pinterest and come across the new flashy strategy for Instagram growth. Then find an interesting article on email marketing, then come across a new book about female CEOs that sounds interesting that someone just posted as a notification came flying across your computer. You add the read this book to your to do list and then you find yourself scrolling down a beauty influencers feed to find out how she plucks her eyebrows. You were doing anything and everything but the thing that you actually need to do. Why do we do this? It's because we're stimulating our brain with something new and finds joy in that. It's lighting up the pleasure center in our brain and our brain wants more of it. Let's be real. It's not a thrilling adventure to sit down and write an email sequence. So when you come across something that is fresh and new, it's so easy, easy to become distracted. Have you ever gotten excited by opening up a brand new notebook? I mean, it's blank, no long to do lists yelling at you. It feels like a fresh start. It's new, it's clean, and is thrilling. That is what hopping over on Instagram, Facebook, or even doing a Google search can do. It can feel like a brand new start like cracking open a fresh notebook to a world of possibilities. And ultimately, that bills a tad bit more exhilarating than hunkering down and completing a list of things you should actually be doing to grow your business. Are you noticing a behavior pattern, you fill that new notebook up again with a renewed sense of purpose determination, and then you become bored overwhelmed and go down the dark rabbit hole of endless scrolling and scrolling and searching to fill up that new notebook that you'll never attend to the cycle repeats over and over. Now, while you may be feeling extremely busy, nothing really ever gets done and you can't complete projects. And then you feel so confused. If I'm doing so much stuff. Why is nothing really happening? It's kind of not your fault, though. You can't blame yourself for being distracted. Not entirely. Anyway, let's take a real hard look at how social media actually works. There is a reason it's called a feed when you're looking at the information presented is because all of this information feeds your brain. And remember, our brain gets a little high learning new information. So every day when we spend our scrolling, scrolling, scrolling through all of this new information, it's kind of like little junkies getting our fix and this is not an accident. Some of the most brilliant people in the world work at social media companies to help you get addicted to the shiny objects feed. When you get the feel-good endorphins, you get addicted. So you keep coming back for more. They are stuffing your head full of shiny objects because it's their job, and they get paid very well to do that job as best they can look to you. They're like, how many hours? You've been on social media this week. Go ahead. I don't even know if I'd ever look. Okay, so according to tech jury, the average user spends two hours and 33 minutes each day on social media that adds up to five years and four months of their life all spent on social media. And I'm kind of thinking this is on the low end. These social media companies are very successful. No wonder why you can't get anything done. I think that a social media feed should be renamed Maybe something like a bloat or the gluttony of information or data binge where your excuses can be I can't right now I'm data bingeing. When did we become such a gluttonous society back in my grandparent’s day they lived in scarcity we're buying one set of encyclopedias was a treasure. We're on Christmas if you got one paint set, it was beyond what they could have ever imagined or hope for. Today, most of us live a life of abundance. We have stocked grocery stores, restaurants on every corner, stuff piled high in our garages, Christmas presents pallets so high, you can't even see the tree and you sometimes can't even find your cat. The amount of information we're exposed to on a daily basis is so high. You have a hard time filtering through all the things to find your path. But yet most of us still have a scarcity mentality. So anything new, shiny, grabs our attention causes to spin circles, then wait through the overabundance of information until we're living Left and heap wondering why nothing, nothing is getting accomplished. The bottom line is new information is exciting. And it gives your brain a surge of feel-good dopamine, and it can actually become addictive. And while it's not your fault, per se, you definitely need to get control of yourself if you want to create a successful business and the life that you have been dreaming about, so, I'm going to share some tools with you to help you get
off the addiction cycle and go head to head with your head. Have you ever noticed the acronym for shiny object syndrome is SOS? What does SOS usually stand for? Help, right? I want to help you each time you find yourself falling into this shiny object syndrome or wondering if you're chasing something that's not on your goals list, but sounds good at the moment. So from now on, SOS is going to Stand for “Scream Out and Step Away”. Here's how it works. Step one is “Scream”. Yes, scream. But not in the way that you think if you years ago sitting down in a conference taking notes like mad English flying off the paper, I was learning about many chat Facebook Groups products, this platform that platform, this app that app, YouTube, Instagram, this that everything else, and I wrote all down, got home, filled up my to-do list with all the shiny new things that I just heard about. I was going to use my a game to get it all scheduled out. I was on fire and knew I'd be breaking barriers within weeks. Well, those weeks past and I felt like an absolute failure when I hadn't gotten any of my to-do list done. That list was sitting there like a heavy load on my shoulders are reminding me of all the things that I should be doing but wasn't for whatever reason. So last year, I did something different instead of taking notes of the conference I was attending. I just listened Yes, just listen. Sure I had a pen and paper with me. But I didn't write anything down until the end of each presentation. And only then I wrote one to two key things. Instead of pages and pages of content that at the end of the day, I didn't take those notes and instantly converted all to a to-do list. In fact, I didn't do any of that. At the end of the conference, I glanced down the one page of notes, because that's all it was. And I didn't do anything because I was waiting to see what the universe was going to scream at me to do. I decided then and there I would show up each and every day ready to work. But I would wait for direction from the universe, or God or whatever you call that invisible force that seems to know us better than we know ourselves, and want better for us than we could ever hope for or imagine in ourselves. And you know what happened? All of that busy work that I didn't really need to do just melted away I became laser-focused. I became aware of the few things that really needed to do. I call this step screen because I want you to be able to clear the noise in your mind. So that when the universe is screaming for you to do something, all the moaning and groaning of your to-do list doesn't drown out what you really need to be doing. Now I understand this won't work at every conference, I understand that taking notes helps us to remember the important stuff. But what if we are taking notes on the wrong thing that only keeps us busy, but doesn't propel our business forward? That speaker who's up on stage? Have they really tested their strategy? Or is it just a one and done thing that they're excited to talk about? Listen for the things that are long-lasting, listen for the things that you really need. Give yourself permission to all that noise and all that chaos slide. When we go down rabbit holes of information, whether it's social media, or conferences or other places, we tend to get a little trigger happy and it's like we pull the trigger. On every single shiny object that comes our way, but the reality is, a lot of shiny things are garbage and a waste of time. You can throw absolutely everything that you've ever heard or learned at the wall to see what sticks. But you're usually going to end up with a very messy floor, that you've got to clean up. Better throw only two or three things, you know, stick them clean up is a cinch, right? I've learned it is very important to let things go. If something is really important. It'll keep popping up. And when you can't let it go. That's when you should be looking at it seriously. It's almost like that things start screaming at you to pay attention to me. I'm not saying sit back and do nothing and wait for screams. I'm saying work so hard to clear that clutter in your brain so you can hear what direction you should be going. Here's an example of how screaming has happened in my own life. for almost three years the universe has been screaming at me to create the zero 100 K system, but I kept ignoring it. Why? Because I had to really know that's what I wanted. It was a big stretch with e-commerce, I was able to hide behind my computer screen
16:13 with coaching entirely new games, I was gonna be the face of the brand. It took me years to become comfortable with that. I'm not shy, but more of an introvert. I had to literally be screamed at to get it done. In e-commerce. If you have hundreds of customers saying hundreds of different things, and you react to all of them. You'll be blown to and fro Yes, listen to what they're saying. But don't act on every little thing. Just listen like I did at the conference. don't fix do try see everything a customer wants. First just listen. And then let the universe scream at you and what you really need to do. If you're trying to be an influencer shop owner, YouTube star TikTok sensation event planner writer can be crappy to all those things if you do them all at the same time. Pick one, crush it, then you can move on to the next. You can be good at one or two things and mediocre at the rest. Okay? We just went overstep one of screaming. Step two is “Out”, as in out with the new and in with the old Yes, I said that backward. It's usually out with old and in with a new but for our purpose, we want to kick new to the curb. And here's why. When Jared and I travel, we usually have a couple of options. Option one is to go to the trendy places that we personally find to be overpriced, get just an okay experience. These places are filled with vendors selling anything and everything. But authentic local products. We laugh about how many times we see the same product, but with different city names and know it's all produced by the same manufacturer. At these places, the authentic nature is completely washed out which is why it'd be Comes known as a tourist trap with overpriced food, trinkets with people holding up signs to take you places for a low, overpriced ticket, right? Or option to school local, summer off the beaten path that has been around forever. It's a complete opposite of the experience of the trending towards destinations. These places haven't been traveled much. And we get local experiences. We don't pay the inflated prices. We get away from the masses of travelers and see as much of the thing that we want to see. We get what we're wanting from our vacation. going on vacation is kind of like starting a business. Think about all the new shiny platforms that come and go on the internet, MySpace, Vine, Google Plus Now we're talking TikTok, and I'm sure there's gonna be a new one that comes along shortly. This is like the trendy tourist trap. people flock to it. But they're missing the real purpose of the visit. Yes, I know people build businesses around social media. How many are doing it for just social numbers? And as broke as can be, you don't go into business as a volunteer, you go into business to make money and to serve people. I just Googled successful media platforms and pulled up over 50. I only knew 11 of the 50. There are so many social platforms already out there. And can you imagine how long it would take you just to get an account on all of them. Your time is limited, your time is precious. Your moments with your family are limited and precious. Don't go after every single shiny platform or thing. Have you ever heard of a guy named Warren Buffett? He uses a $20 flip phone. Even though he owns 5.5% of apple and you want to know what his shares of Apple are worth? Let's just say it starts with a B. I'm sure the company would probably even give him a free iPhone. But he doesn't want it out with a new in with the old let the universe screaming you and then build on one or two platforms. That's it. Go with platforms that have been around for a while versus quick, shiny, new and unproven themes, you'll feel FOMO the fear of missing out or not having the latest and the greatest. But building a business that last four years isn't about running from platform to platform, slow it down my friend, build on platforms have been tried and tested. And I'm not saying to never take a risk on other stuff. I'm just saying if you're gonna put all your eggs in the TikTok basket, you're highly increasing your risk build on all things that still work to this day, email, community, branding, influencers kindness, you get the point, right, we've got step number one is “Scream”. Step number two is “Out”. Step number three is “Step away and distance yourself”. This doesn't mean, isolate yourself. This means to be picky about how you spend your time. So you can think clearly and get more accomplished. Because what we don't do defines us just as much as what we do. Do think
about chick fil a. sounds so good right now. What are they known for? Not opening on Sunday, not serving beef, not selling low quality. What they don't offer is talked about just as much in their marketing as what they do offer. There's another store called b&h photo, and it closes their online checkout Friday night to Saturday night due to their religious beliefs. Wait, what? If you've never experienced B&H Photo, it's like the Amazon of just photography and video equipment. They pull in $1.2 billion a year. Yet, they have decided to close their stores and online shopping cart once a week. Even They could automate the process. And it has caused such a big stir about what they don't do that it's probably even more than what they do do. What stuff Won't you do that will define your business? What can you step away from? Okay, so let's go back to that guy named Warren Buffett. The billionaire lives in Omaha, Nebraska. Yeah, most wealthy people wouldn't even step foot in Nebraska. When asked why he lived in Nebraska, Warren Buffett said, it's very easy to think clearly here. You're undisturbed by irrelevant factors. And the noise generally, business investments if you can't think clearly in Omaha, you're not going to think clearly any place. Buffett chose to step away from the madness of Wall Street so he could focus on growing his company. So what can you step away from in your own life when blogging conferences were all the rage I decided that I needed to skip the age. I went to over three, over the course of 10 years that I've been blogging. It wasn't because I didn't think I would learn. I just didn't want to get caught up in all the stuff I knew my goals, saw my dream and then got to work. I do think socializing and getting to know people is vital to business growth. Having a community, talking to people face to face is absolutely essential, and it can take your business to the next level. But when you're going just to get away, it can be a major distraction. Step away from consuming a social media. If you're gonna be on social media sites, be a producer of the content. I am my kids biggest fans, but there's no doubt when I watch them consuming social media. I kind of want to ground them all on the spot. They are consuming so much content in such a short period versus getting good at developing content. Yes, I do set timers. Yes, I do realize their kids Yes, I am a good mom when I take their phones away. My job as a mom is to help them with self control consumption. And that never ending scroll. The biggest time suck is scrolling social media feeds will stop it. Set timers, get the apps off your phone, leave your phone in the car, turn that dang thing off, replace the hours of social media scrolling, with thinking, allowing yourself time to be quiet to sit still and listen for those screams. So, to review, when you begin to feel like you are looking for the shiny objects or being distracted by them, remember, it's SOS scream out and step away, scream, let the universe tell you where you want to go out, quit chasing the new and go back to the basics as those are the things that will get you to your goals faster, and step away from the noise.
