Starting An Online Store To Record Breaking Months

Want your best sales month ever? Do THIS!  The world you can create for yourself by starting an online store is so exciting. I know I open every episode up this way but when I interview these amazing people from the $0-100k community that’s the first word that comes to mind. It never gets old to see people who are used to making the same income every month, start an online store, and make 4 times what I was making as a teacher.

In this episode, we are chatting with Bev Schweigert about how she went from what she calls “slow going” to record-breaking. In fact, even with all the craziness going on in the world from COVID, she has broken records in her business in March, April, and then in May!

Bev’s “Why” For Starting An Online Store

After helping thousands of people with starting an online store, I’ve learned that everyone has their own little reason for wanting to get started. Maybe it’s to spend more time at home with the kids, maybe it’s to pay off some debt, or maybe you’re just tired of your 9 to 5. 

For Bev, she’d always wanted to get involved in church missions but never had the time. Once her kids were out of the house, she decided that now was the time to do it. But there was one problem. If she quit her job, she still needed another way to generate some income.

So, after consuming all my free content online for a few weeks (Podcast, YouTube, Blog) she was ready to make the leap into the 0-100k System and press fast-forward on her plans of starting an online store.

By January 2019 her shop was open for business. To help give you some perspective on the amazing results you’ll read about below, it was June 2020 when I had this conversation with Bev – just 1.5 years since opening her store. 

 

Transitioning From Being a Slow Goer 

I’m not going to lie, starting an online store can be a lot of work in the beginning. There are so many things to get done. Early on, Bev fell into the same routine as so many other new shop owners. 

They focus on things that don’t actually move the needle on their business in terms of revenue. You know what I mean, endless hours tweaking every little detail on the website, retaking pictures a 100 times, and planning out the perfect promotion strategy.

If you wait for the perfect time for starting an online store or for your website to be perfect, you’ll never get started.

Once Bev put her focus on the things that really mattered and stopped worrying about if that button was in the right place on her site or if she should or shouldn’t post personal stuff on her social media, her store really started to take off.

 

During a Pandemic She Had Her Best Month

At the beginning of 2020, Bev made a commitment to herself that this was her year. She was out of the phase of starting an online store and was now in the phase of growing an online store. Then comes March when everyone’s plans, no matter who you are, got drastically changed. COVID came in and made everyone panic. Everyone was being told that people weren’t going to buy anything non-essential. 

That didn’t stop Bev though. She hit the gas pedal and began putting out an offer every single day for her products. Whether it was a Facebook Live, email, or social media post, there was an offer going out each and every day.

Guess what happened next?!

In March – during the middle of the pandemic – Bev had her biggest month in sales ever!

Bev realized the power of putting offers out in the world. The only way you can win is if you take the shot, and Bev was taking her shots. Because of this, things grew even more in April! And then May… yea… even more sales than April!

 

Starting An Online Store 101: Batch Work

If you are starting an online store and you want to quickly gain a lot of efficiency in your business, the number one thing you can do is start batching your work. If you aren’t familiar with batching, it just means that you are going to pick a time and focus on only one type of work. For me, I batch my podcast episodes. I’ll block out time on my calendar and record several episodes at once. That way I’m not constantly thinking about it.

For Bev, she started her online store so she could spend more time with her family so hitting record sales numbers couldn’t come at the expense of that. That meant she had to get more efficient.

She began blocking off time on her calendar to batch things like her social media posts, emails, other routine tasks that had to get done. To help keep track of everything that needed to get done, Bev took me up on what I taught her at ClanCon 2019, and implemented Trello. Whether you use Trello or something else, you have to be organized before you can be efficient. 

 

This was a value-filled episode whether you are a veteran store owner or just starting an online store. I hope you got a few things that you can implement in your business immediately. 

Here were my biggest takeaways from this chat with Bev Schweigert. 

  1. Let your true mission become part of your messaging
  2. Change from sales to service by asking questions to your customers
  3. Don’t waste time on things that don’t drive revenue
  4. Talk about gifting more than selling
  5. Aim to create 30 offers in a month
  6. You don’t need more products, you need more offers
  7. Stay organized using Trello
  8. Batch your work for efficiency 
  9. Plan out deals one month ahead
  10. Don’t give up
  11. Present your customers with one offer at a time

Or do you only recommend opening a store for those who do?     So far I’m really excited about this podcast....and hoping it doesn’t all lead to what so many other podcasts I’ve listened to have, which is “I’ll tell you just enough to get you excited and start to believe you can do it, but to really start to change your life it’s time to pay for the membership/course and if you can’t afford it that’s just an excuse”. Hey, this is Alison, I'm actually sitting here with Makayla right here, as she is talking to colleges, kind of crazy that my first daughter is going to college. What happened? Where does life go sometimes? Alright, so today, I am super excited. I know I always start off these podcasts with “I'm super excited”. But when I get to interview these guests, I leave so full, my heart is full, my gratitude is full. Most of them give me the chills with their stories. And this is no exception. So I posted a picture of Bev on social media. Now. It's a picture of her smiling from ear to ear and she had white order labels draped all over her shoulders. I had a flood of comments coming in that said hey Alison, are those CVS receipts, and although yes, CVS savings receipts could absolutely be brag-worthy. I think the order labels for the bajillions of orders that came rushing in is triple brag-worthy, she made a heck of a lot more money, learning how to sell then trying to save by cutting coupons. Now I'm not saying there's anything bad about coupons. I love a coupon.

But there's a limit to the amount that can be made with that method. So in today's episode, she shares how in a year she went from what she called slow going in 2019, to breaking records in March of 2020. Then breaking them again in April, then again in May, and how she is four times what I made as a school teacher blows my mind. I see this happening all the time. And even being a part of it, doing it for nine years and then watching. Other people go through the same process. It is still exciting for me. I know the nine to five schedule. I know I've been there when I was a school teacher. And then I've seen what can happen in the online world. And it is so exciting that you can create how you can create your income, and you get to craft it around your schedule. I'm not saying that it doesn't take work. You know, I'm a big believer in work. So I wanted to bring her in to let her share and talk about the one thing actually, there's a few but there's one major thing that helped her go from slow going to now how she's managing all these orders in three months when the world was going through a pandemic. And she did this all with her grandson by her sight. I hope you will take notes from this, because of this can happen during the chaos of the world. Can you imagine? Sure. Basically, I have when my girls were little, my work full time. And when they were in high school in college, I worked and they got married and got through college and got married. And then I decided that it was time for me to quit working. Because I wanted to get more involved in missions. We had always been very active in our church and missions had a big part of my heart. And I wasn't having the time to get into the missions because I was working full time. So I started looking into finding a way that I could get more involved in missions, but however, to do that I needed to make some money. So I looked up Some information on selling things online and I came across all of your different videos and such and for about a week, just like many others said, I kind of really stalked you. And I would, I watched every video I could find about you and learn so much just from those videos about what it meant to have an online business and things like that. So I finally joined and got my first store opened up in January 2019. And that's when I started Blessedbe Boutique.

Oh my goodness. Okay, so let's dive into this. So you started your first store 2019 it was you had you knew you wanted to do these missions and you had to have money to be able to pay for it. But what I think you're selling above I think that's also another mission.

Definitely, yes. It didn't start out that way. It just started out as I found a few necklaces that I really liked that I thought were pretty. And I thought, well, I could sell these, you know, and maybe I can sell them as a fundraiser or something like that. So I started showing them to some of my friends and everything. And they're like, Oh, yeah, those are really pretty, you could sell those. So I did well, then as I got more into it. I started realizing that what I really wanted was to give people a way that they could share their faith just by wearing jewelry. They didn't have to give a big long testimony. They didn't have to feel like they were pressuring anybody but by simply wearing a beautiful cross or a heart or something that spoke to them. If somebody said, Oh, that's pretty, they could express why they were wearing it. So that's kind of where my part got started. And being able to To share more than just jewelry.

Okay, I love that you said that you bought some jewelry that you thought was pretty. And then you figured out what your brand was. Right? Because at first you're like, I'm just gonna sell jewelry. My friends are saying they like it. And so you didn't go into it thinking, I'm going to give people a way to share faith by wearing jewelry. Right?

Not at first. No, it was just a way to make some money and trying to think of fundraising ideas.

I love it. I love it because so many people are like, I don't have a mission or I don't know what I'm supposed to do. I don't think you're supposed to know what you're supposed to do. I think the drive is that you want to make money. And then as you start to make money, then you start to figure out your branding your mission statement for your business. Okay, so now let's keep moving forward Zacks. I love that give people a way to share their faith by wearing their jewelry. How long did it take you from the first thing that you sold to be able to To get more into this mission,

I'm not too long because it was like I said, January is when I started and then I went to your first conference in Utah and I started listening to all the presenters talking about their why's Why were they were doing this what was most important to them? You know, and I, I started thinking, Well, my Why is my is my mission to go on mission trips and be able to give to more people in my community and other areas. And so I really started to dig deeper into that. So my social media then changed from just saying I was selling jewelry and Oh, look at this pretty cross necklace, to putting more meaning behind it. How do you feel when you're wearing this? If you were to give this as a gift? Why would you give it as a gift? What meaning would you be trying to give to that person through this item? Things like that. Oh, my

Yes. I was one of the slow goers. So even though I was listening to you constantly going, I never missed the training. You saw me every single time that you were live on on a Tuesday or a Friday call I was on. And I was just everything. I just was listening to everything and taking notes wildly. But I screwed up in that, even though I kept you kept saying put the offers out there let people know. I was so worried about my website being perfect. And making sure that I had everything just perfect that I was not putting the offers out there. I was telling a story. I was doing pretty good with that. But it wasn't giving them a real reason to buy. So once I figured that out, that's when the sale Started, the people started thinking they're more of Yeah, it's like I would give them a reason to buy I would give them an offer, I would make sure that I do what you suggest in like I do a Give, give emails and then I do have a sales email. But the bottom of every one of my gift emails, I also offer them an opportunity to purchase a special one this or a discount on this item or something like that. So now every time I send out an email, even if it's just a Christian picture for them to download and color, or one of my weekly devotionals that I do, they have an opportunity to tie that into a piece of jewelry or several pieces of jewelry and purchase it so that when they get that jewelry, it's gonna remind them of what my story was. And then once a week I do a big item. I do a big promotion or a sale or something like that in my emails and those are Go really, really well, because they're already thinking about what my story has been at least I believe that's that's what they're drinking.

I think a lot of people feel like they're slow goers because they might not be seeing they're working right. You are working on your website, making sure it was perfect. And you realize, Oh, wait a sec, maybe I am working on the thing. That's not actually going to create the income. So do you feel like because now you're not a slug or like you're on fire above us? Here. So do you feel like it wasn't necessarily a slow gore? It was just putting effort and energy into the thing that didn't quite matter the most?

Yes, definitely. Yes. Like I said, I was worried about, you know where this was on my website or something like that. As soon as I realized that I had to change my focus, everything changed, I was able to, and I started putting the offers out there more, you know, working with influencers, selling on deal sites. First I was thinking, Oh, goodness, I don't want to do that. But now I realized the importance of getting those customers, making sure they get a nice email and following up with them afterwards and their repeat customers. So it's okay to do that. And it's okay to be on social media and posting about my family or something that I did that is brought me joy, because that, again, is letting them see who I am. and showing them what it means for me to want to share things with them. So make sense.

Yeah. That was another reason I quit working because my youngest daughter had been in grad school and she and her husband decided that they wanted to start a family while they she was in grad school. So she had a baby and I lived an hour away and I was missing my time with him. So that was another reason I definitely wanted to quit work. And when I was working with my business, then I was able to work my time around him. Unfortunately, my my daughter got ill last year when I was building my business last fall, especially, they had to move but the good thing is, is they moved five minutes from me. Now they are right down the road. So I get Josiah time. Anytime I want it. He spent the nights a couple times a week and I get him when you know I'm able to help them out. And I'm able to help be with him. But yet he helps me too. He likes to help pack jewelry. Yeah, big help three years old. But I love that I'm able to work around my family, it's the best possible way for me to still continue my work, yet still continue the most important thing, which is my family.

Absolutely 100% we do the things that we do so that we can spend more with those that we love. Okay, can we take you back to the offers a little bit about that? Sure. So in the beginning, when you had termed it slow going, how many offers were you putting out into the world?

Maybe one a week.

Yeah. And it's just, you know, and I'd say, I'd say, Oh, well, I had 15 people on my website today. Why didn't they? Why didn't they all buy, you know, I didn't get why they were coming if they weren't all going to buy and I wasn't thinking about the fact that it was it's a numbers thing. You know, you say all the time that you know, we were taught wrong in school. Far as numbers go, you know, and it's, it's just so I started slowly increasing how many offers I would put out. So I went from once a week to twice a week, then three times a week. And then last fall was when I really started for fourth quarter, pushing a lot more, getting more involved in deal sites, increasing my email more. And then the beginning of the year, I made a commitment that this was going to be my year. I definitely I wanted to hit 100,000 as quickly as possible. So I really upped it. Starting in March, I just pushed so hard and I made sure that I put out some kind of an offer every day, whether it was something on a deal site, something like I said my if I was sending out a download, I made sure that there was an offer in there if I was doing a weekly special there was an offer. I would get on and do Facebook Lives and I would give them an offer and I was able to try At that by using different codes for all those offers, so I knew which ones were working. So if my Facebook Live brought me in 12 orders from that one live, well then guess what I need to do more Facebook Lives. So I just learned that now I'm consistently, I try really hard to put one offer of some sort out every single day even if it's something little.

So you went from one to 30 or no, I guess for for a month to 30 a month. And k you said something huge in there. You did it during you started in March of 2020. And we went on March of 2020. Although it felt like three years was a really scary point for some people. I mean, you're selling jewelry and then the buzz out there is people aren't going to buy non essentials. They're only going to want to buy essentials. Why did you keep going what was the thing that said oh my My gosh, you know what, I'm just gonna step back a little bit. What was the thing that kept you to to crush this?

Well, I knew if I step back, I wouldn't get the sales. You know, people were going to be like, Well, no, no, no, I don't want to do that. So I knew that I had to make them think about why they would want the items from me who they could give them for. I think a big percentage of my sales is gifts. People see something and it makes them think of somebody and they want to give it to somebody they love. I offer you know, I tell people that if they want to pay for it and have it shipped to somebody else, put the address in the notes section on the card and I will mail it to them with a little note. And that's a huge part in my business as I seem to give more gifts than anything. So that's when I really doubled up well more than doubled up I really went crazy in March and put those offers out there and I had my biggest month ever and in March.

Big Biggest month ever in March during them? Yep. When the world is shutting down, Bev, you kept up and you served your people because you didn't say buy more for you. You said buy more to give, buy more give. And that is when I started getting all these messages from you. I got messages before, but of how much you were exploding. Yeah, and it's a joy every time I get messages from you, I'm like, Yes boba because you're just not selling products. You're selling something that gives people hope and peace and joy, and something to look forward to in this time and the ability to give a gift and we all know that gift giving is really fun. People stuff. Okay, so then walk me through April. So your cells are picked up in March. Wow.

April, again. was just even higher people that purchased in March then I noticed that my email offers increased even more. So not only was just the normal deals I was putting out getting new customers, my email list started growing like crazy. And the customers that had already purchased were coming back and buying more. So April then was my next another highest month and then may was even higher. So I've had it's just been March, April and May have just each month gotten bigger and bigger and bigger. And I, I've got some big goals for June. So I've been working even harder already in June, because I've got I want June to be even bigger, because I've got my eyes on a big goal. So I'm excited.

Number one, his organization when you showed us how to use a Trello board last year at the conference, it has become my number one way of keeping my business organized because I've got every single day a list of everything I know has to be done for that day, and ready for the next day. So I know what offers need to go out which day, I batch, a lot of my work social media, if I'm sitting there and just is running around playing in the water, I can get on my phone and post a bunch of social media posts and schedule them for the next five days. And they're done. And I don't have to worry about what my social MIDI is going to be for the day. I also plan out what my deals are going to be for the month so I know I want to do a buy one get one free, or I want to do a big blowout on inventory that is you know on sale to make room for new inventory. So I've got a list of what items I want to have. So I when I do have that, I know that you know Monday afternoon I'm going to have five hours to be able to work my business. Then those five hours are my power hours that I'm able to really push and sit down and get all the work done and I'm able to click off on my Trello board exactly what I've done. If I don't get it done, because something's come up. I'll move it to the next day so that I don't forget that I have that to do for the next day. So I just claim it

I'm done with it because I make sure I have it all all scheduled, and I do it so that it posts on both my Instagram and my Facebook page at the same time. One of the things that I will always keep for me that I will not pay somebody else to do is my posts and I know a lot of people that's the first thing they get off their plate, but my posts are my mission. That is my story. So when I pick a picture with an inspirational quote, that's me, that's me out there. I don't want somebody else trying to tell everybody what they think I'm feeling. So that post is me. So I will, I will look up a scripture, I'll look up inspirational quotes, and I put my little story with it and put it out there, find a picture, you know, and work it that way. And then I, you know, throw in my sale items along in there, too. So when that's done, then I know for the rest of the week, I'm done. I don't have to worry about Instagram and Facebook. It's done. Love it.

Yeah, the only thing I still do do is I'd still get on Instagram stories. And I set a reminder on my phone to remind me to get on instant gram stories, you know, once or twice a day and I'll and usually that's quick and easy because I'll just repost something that somebody else has or if I see, you know, a story that's trending post it, I just or what's going or pictures of Josiah, you know, so people can see what my life is like. So I just tried to still stay active on stories as well. Yes,

It's condensing the amount of work. Okay, let's dive into the deals and money offers. Let's talk about offers and how many offers that you put out there. So some people are confused about offers. Will you talk about what an offer is how you are able to sit down and back out the amount of offers You can do in one month,

I do that again, on my Trello board. When I really decided in March, I wanted to post or to increase, I sat down and restarted all my inventory. So I knew I had 100 of this cross necklace. So I thought, Okay, I'm gonna post this to this deal site. And I posted that went to the deal sites. So then I made sure that when those sales started coming in, reorder more inventory for that item, plus a few more items. And I would keep track of that on my Trello board about this deals going here on this deal site. And I'm going to post about this necklace on Facebook, and then I'm going to post about this on Instagram or someplace else. And I keep track of them all so that I know what's going on at what time and then I'm able to once I got those all set up, I just duplicate them. I just keep running the same things over again. So now the money that I've reinvested in To products, I'm able to just move from one board to six weeks from now, and I'll promote it again because by then I've gotten more inventory in for it and I'm ready for another offer to go live. And I know I've got plenty of inventory for that. Does that make sense? Oh, hi. I

yes, whether I have to fix change the price, change the pictures, change the wording on my website. My daughter was an English major so she helps me a lot with making sure that my description sound right. And then I'm getting my message across or how I can play it, you know in a different angle for reasons why they would want that. The one necklace I have is the issue She believes she could. So she did. I offered that out in Christmas time thinking it was going to be huge. And it sold a few. But in March, I offered it the end of March, beginning of April. And it sold out so fast, because I played it on the fact that there's these women who are graduating or are, you know, working their businesses or whatever, whatever way that they believe they could. And they did it. And they were huge. It was just the timing was perfect, but I sold out so I had to order more.

I love that you didn't give up on that product. Because how many times have we all tried to sell a product and it didn't work? But maybe it was the wording was, it was just the wording? Yeah, heck still amazing. Yes. How you switched it and phrased it differently. So good. Okay, so can you be specific about some of the offers that you put out there like what is it what specifically are some You don't have to say like that. You can but be specific on your offers. What do they sound like?

A lot of them are a percentage off a specific item. It seems like my offers go better. Whenever instead of just saying you know, occasionally I'll have a store wide sale of you know 25% off or something and it was pretty good. But if I build a story about one item, and promote that item, and put the offer just on that item, it's like my customers are looking for it. And it makes them think about that one item and it makes them not as confused by my whole boutique because I've got, I think 50 or so items in my boutique so that's a lot to look through, you know, and they could search the word cross and find a whole ton of cross necklaces. But if the one that I'm promoting that day is a buy one, get one half off on this cross necklace, and when Wouldn't this look nice for you? But you know what your mom or your sister your aunt would love this as well? Why not get one and get one for her or get one to keep to give to somebody as motivation whenever you know you need a gift that the last minute.

They probably bounce but by saying Look how cool this crosses and then you're saying get one for yourself and then give one to your mom. And it's turning the conversation instead of just beb above. I'm trying to think here there's been quite a few lately a lot, a lot of them are, are just a percentage off and I offer flat rate shipping, I make sure I let them know that right off the topic that they can get free shipping, you know by assault if they purchase a certain dollar amount. So I you know, and I try to it's mostly just a percentage off if I do a 20 25% off offer and it's something that I have built the story around, then it really helps get that to be something that they really want. But I also do I have my cross sells as well. So I have items every month I change them where if so if they purchase this ring, it'll pop up and say you've unlocked the deal to get this small jewelry box as well or this other ring, and they can do that as an add on to their order already, a lot of times that will get them to their free shipping or it won't increase their shipping cost at all. So that's helped my overall sales as well just by using, you know, an app that gives them additional opportunities to buy something else that they may not have thought about.

Okay, so you are saying I'm going to back it up just a little bit because you said so I'm out so it was amazing. So not only are you doing the offer, but you're leaning into the story. Not just buy this for 20% of buy this for 25% off it's buy this for 25% off and then gift one to someone like your mom or and tell that story of hope in there as well. Mm hmm. And do you do this in your description? Do you do it? How do you tell these stories?

Both I do it a lot in whatever my offer is it whether it's an email or on Facebook Facebook post, or even part of the deal that you know, if I'm doing it on a deal site, I'll say that as well. So I make sure that and then in the description as well, I'll re emphasize that as well. And I always package everything and I stated on the bottom, that every piece is ready for gifting because I package it in a little blue organza bag. So it comes ready for them to just hand to the person. They don't have to worry about wrapping it up or anything they can just give it right like it is. And if they do have it sent to the person, you know, they'll open it up and it's a surprise to them. It's packaged so that it's perfect for them. It doesn't just come in a little plastic sleeve that with nothing listed. It comes ready for gifting.

Okay, so if you could tell the entrepreneur who started their business and maybe they're not quite where they want to be, or maybe they're not getting the cells or they're thinking about quitting Because they're not having the success. What would you tell this entrepreneur?

Oh, goodness, don't give up.

Don't give up. You know, there were times in the past year when I was, like I said, the I would say, Well, you know, I had 100 people at my store yesterday, I can't believe they didn't buy, you know, and I still have low days where I won't have many sales, and that's okay. But then I'll have, you know, a 1700 dollar day where it's like, Whoa, and it all evens out. But don't give up. You just have to keep tweaking and diving into it. And don't stop learning. Don't stop listening, hearing something that worked for somebody else, you know, somebody who sells something that's totally not related to my item at all. I will hear that they tried something that worked for them just by changing it a little bit. And I can use that in my business as well with my products. So I'll try it and see if it works for me. So just keep tweaking what you're doing until you see where that success is. And then, as Megan says, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. So you know what you're good sellers are, you know what, how your customers like to buy, and just keep using that over and over again. So that, you know, you've got that steady income coming in, while you're getting new inventory while you're trying out new things. It's just a constant revolving door of what you're offering. People

Oh, I'd be so sad. It would be so sad for you. Right You know, and then the other reason that I do this is because I want to be able to give back part. You know, like I said mission is so huge in my family and we adopt a school in Peru and and we like to go on mission trips and we like to give to our community and you know, my husband and I and our and our kids are all very involved in church. And we like to do work all in our neighborhoods and things like that. So when I see a need, you know, our food pantries in our area have been in such terrible need, you know, people with that are off of work, don't have the money. Well, guess what, I had the biggest sales so I have the money to be able to give them my food pantry, so that they could go out and buy the food for others. And that's all part of my mission. That's why I'm doing it. I want to be able to give back above, okay, I just got the chills when you said that you saw that there was a need. Then you said I need to figure out how to fix that need and that is by figuring out how to earn money. And so you're corporated your branding of who you are into Your products, and now you have money to give. So for me, I look at you and I'm like, Bev, get so much money, earn so much money because you'll do such good things with it. You opting a school in Peru, you helping to fill these pantries.
