The 3 things we need to unlearn as entrepreneurs.  Bam WHAM….From that very first day of life, we come into this world learning.

Walking, talking, reading, driving, figuring out what to do with the bedhead hair,  and yes, starting your first online shop.

We are in a constant state of learning.

But have you ever considered that some of those things you’ve learned along the way might be holding you back?

3 Things You Need to Unlearn In Order to Grow

Wait.  WHAAAAAAAA????

You’ve probably heard the story about the woman who, when cooking ham, would cut it down and end up throwing half of it away.

When someone finally asked her why she was doing that – you know what her reply was?

“I don’t know, this is just how my Grandma always did it.”

Then a friend enlightened her as to why her Grandma actually did it.

It wasn’t because it was a way to get the best-tasting ham, it was because her Grandma had a SMALL oven that a full ham couldn’t fit in.

All that time she was wasting half of the ham because she was just doing what she’d learned.

As an entrepreneur, there are things that you need to unlearn (that have nothing to do with ham), THAT CAN really HELP YOU make the progress you are desiring.

After years of helping people just like you start, grow, and scale their online shops, I’ve noticed 3 things that most entrepreneurs need to unlearn if they want to take things to the next level.

There are so many examples of things we learn that are no longer serving us. In fact, sometimes they are actually hurting us and we don’t even know it. They are things we need to unlearn. And that’s what I want to share with you here – the 3 things that, as an entrepreneur, you need to unlearn.

1st Thing To Unlearn – Your Stuff Isn’t Just Stuff

You need to make a mental shift and unlearn the thought that you are just selling “stuff”. Your stuff is changing lives, no matter how small of an impact it might be. When I was selling cupcake liners, straws, or twine, it was actually changing lives.

I had to change my mindset about my products and the value they brought. Those people wanted my products in their homes for a reason – because it was going to help them in some way. Those cupcake liners were going to prevent that mom from spending time scrubbing her pans. Or maybe, they will help bring the family together for a bake-off competition.

Your products change lives, and you have to realize that. If you are just starting out, maybe you aren’t getting that feedback from your customers yet, but I promise you it’s happening. There are so many examples in the 0-$100k System Facebook Group of people who are sharing stories of how their products are changing lives every single day. You need to unlearn that you are just selling stuff.

2nd Thing To Unlearn – Multitasking Is Not Good

We all have our own talents. No two of us are alike, and that means what I’m great at, you might not be. Or, what you’re great at, I struggle with. Knowing that, why would you think you should be doing everything in your business?

At the beginning of your business, you are leveraging your time to grow your business. When you start making some sales, you have to start using the money to buy back your time. Running on no sleep and constant multitasking is killing you and killing the potential growth of your business.

I had a call with one of my Insiders Mastermind students recently who is doing over 6 figures per month after struggling for a while to get traction in her business. She reached out to me saying she was ready to quit. Long story short, she was stretching herself too thin and trying to do everything in her business. We quickly identified a few quick wins that would buy back more than 12 hours per week of her life. That’s huge for her!

So many businesses fail simply because the entrepreneur becomes exhausted. They ran themselves ragged for far too long, and it impacted their health, which took down their business.

Find people that are great at the things you aren’t so you can buy back your time and focus on the areas of the business that you thrive in. You have to unlearn the multitasking in your business and hire the right people for the right positions.

3rd Thing To Unlearn – Being “Busy”

Have you ever seen a fly that is trying to get out of a window that has an opening just inches away but it for some reason it just keeps hitting the glass over and over? Do you ever wonder why it doesn’t pivot just a little bit and go towards the open air where it can fly free and live its fly life outside?

As entrepreneurs, sometimes we are like the fly. We are working hard, trying the same thing over and over without seeing progress. There have been countless times when I’ve put offers out and they were complete flops. After a few times, I would have to halt everything and take a deep dive into what was going on. Was it the percentage off I was offering? Maybe the product description wasn’t resonating with people? Maybe it was just a few small tweaks that would lead to drastically different results.

Gerard Butler is in my Next Level coaching program, and I had an opportunity to do a Hot Seat session with him. He came in and I got to dig into his site. He wanted help on what else he could be offering to the people who came to buy his pug t-shirts and how he could get influencers interested in promoting his stuff.

We came up with a solution that involved pivoting just a little bit. Kind of like what that fly needed to do. Instead of asking the influencer to just promote his stuff, he’s going to them and asking if there is anything that their audience wants that he can help them make and deliver. You know, there are a ton of influencers out there that put a lot of content into the world but don’t know how to create an income from it. So this option of giving the influencer the platform and support to bring ideas to life was a win-win for both of them. But first, he had to unlearn the standard approach to influencer marketing.

I want you to learn the skill of unlearning.

  • Unlearn that you’re just selling “stuff”
  • Unlearn multitasking in your business
  • Unlearn what it means to be “busy”

If you can unlearn these 3 things, you and your business will start to really take off like a fly that finally found the opening 🙂
