Oh my goodness. I think sometimes, I live in Jurassic Park. Everybody else calls it Puerto Rico, but I swear something crazy magical is happening every single day on this Island. So, the other day, I was talking to a dear friend about business building, and I asked her if she'd ever listened to podcasts on businesses, and what she liked and what she didn't like about them. And she said, you wanna know the truth, Alison.

I just want to make money so I can buy books to read and quilt. And honestly, that made me laugh out loud. I loved her honesty. 04:05 The time that you sat down to power through a bunch of work, your kid called you from school in tears that he left his presentation at home and it's due in 30 minutes and then you realize it's going to take two hours round trip because there's construction both ways or insert whatever excuse you have, whatever it may be. Right here. I'm here to tell you the truth about building a business, what it's like and show you how you can fit it in while you're still managing your sanity and trying to be the best mom that you can be. This is what I'm talking about on today's podcast episode. I want to show you what's working today and dive into some of the business styles or platforms that I've personally been able to grow to a multi eight-figure business while still balancing life. 04:52 Yes, I'd lock myself in a room or a closet. Some days I was able to get work done and as I grew I did get an office, but I didn't go there every day that would have required getting ready and I don't think I was ready for that type of commitment. Now I know there are other ways to make money online out there, but I know for a fact that what I'm about to tell you works because not only I have done it, I've watched others do it as well. But first, let's talk Joanna Gaines. Oh, this woman, I am so glad that she got famous because she gives the world a sunlight. Okay, so you know how she talks about home all the time? I feel like our purpose is for people to love it, to go home. In fact, I think there's some quote floating out there that she wants her home to be the vacation spot for her kids to come back to when they get older or something like that.
05:47 Home is where the center of her world is right now. Yes. She goes out to visit places. She visits customers, she visits her would designer her silos, but always comes back home. It's the one she and the people in her life love to be. So I want you to be like Joanna, but in your own way of course. And to do that, you need to choose your home, but I want you to choose an online home one where you want to create a place for your customers to come back to over and over for either a long stay or a quick visit. Now, as you know, there are lots of styles of homes and these online homes are called platforms. A few of these platforms that I'm going to talk about today are called blogs or an online store and a website. I want you to pick your home, pick something that you can control and own and you're not subject to the algorithms like Instagram or Facebook running a business off Facebook or Instagram alone.
06:50 That's like renting a house and the landlord can change the rules, the price of rent, or even lock you out at any time. And I want something stable for you, something that you have control over. Okay? You know what the episode where Joanna goes into a wrecked home and rebuilds it into a beautiful masterpiece. Oh wait, that's every episode. So this is going to be easy to explain. Okay? Notice how they map things out first and they get really excited about the vision of this house. And then they started tearing things down and it gets really messy and very dirty, like rusty nails and gross dust from like, I don't know, all the 19 hundreds or whatever. And some of these homes are even worthy of gas masks and you know what they do next? Do they stop because it's messy? No, they keep going because they're looking at the vision of it, not the chaos of the issues, the random mold that they found or the cracked foundation, the seed.

So as I'm relating this to business, this is the phase that most people stop. They lose sight of the vision. Focus on the rusty nail that's going to be tossed away anyway. Business building is supposed to get messy and you'll probably find unexpected things behind a wall and it's okay when it gets messy and dirty. Just know that's the process. Now let's take this one step further. Our Joanna and chip thinking about the entire neighborhood and how they're going to fix it and how the school system is going to run in the library and all, everything.
08:48 No, they're just thinking about the one house that they're currently working on. So for you, that could be the one project that you're working on, not how your whole brand is going to look in 10 years. That's the neighborhood, right? Focus on the one house that you are currently on. Okay, so the next thing after the house is starting to look so pretty, they start to invite people over. This is what is called marketing. Yes. Inviting friends to your house. You have to show them the vision of why they should come over. So you call them and you say, Hey, come on over for dinner. That is true marketing at its finest. You told them in four words that they don't have to cook clean and they will be served. Heck yes. This is brilliant marketing and you use it on a regular basis. You're already a marketing expert.
09:45 So no matter the style of the house, it doesn't matter. It's not going to change the way the food tastes or the jokes will be told. The inviting them over is what matters in business. You can have the most beautiful home, but if no invites go out, that means nothing's going to happen. You have to market. Then what if your goal is to invite lots of people over, say hundreds of people and you want to do it tomorrow? Could you do it? I'm kissing. The answer's no. You're not ready to handle the masses yet because you're still looking for where the toilet paper is located. The house you built isn't ready for the masses just yet, but if you set a goal to invite I like three people overnight for the next month, it would be more manageable, right? It would help you keep your life balanced and then we can get more comfortable.
10:34 Then you could increase it more and more. Eventually holding massive parties in the huge party barn that you built next to your house. You see where I'm going with this? When you launch your store you're hoping for $1 million overnight but you're not ready for it and it will break. Businesses are meant to be built and not just heaped together with fingers crossed that it will work. Building a business is really about the process and not the product or even a specific platform. Guess ill have different layouts and different paths to complete the project and some may even take less time than others but all businesses need a home also known as the platform. They need marketing and they need manageable growth so whether you have photography business or an online shop, the process is the same. All right. I want to dive into some of the specific platforms that I've been teasing you about.
11:28 These are the ones that I have used personally. The reason I want you to listen to this part is DC, how you may be able to incorporate one to help you to start or to grow your business or even add additional streams of revenue. This might even help those who've wondered if the grass is greener elsewhere in the online space. I want to take you to that so-called greener side so you can make a decision for yourself and decide once and for all. If it's for you, if not, great, then it's one less thing that you have to worry about. If yes, well I am super glad that I could spark some interest. So what I want to do is dive into three business platforms that I know works and gives you a peek inside. Now, this is not an all-inclusive list, it's more of a high-level view and I just wanted you to know that before we get into it.
12:21 So the first one I want to hop into is a blog with this one I pitched in $125 with two of my friends and in fact, we're actually hitting our 10 year anniversary this month. That's crazy. I'm pretty excited about. We're hitting the double digits with this business. This blog is called, how does she.com and of course you are welcome to go check it out. A blog. It's designed as the newspaper or magazine of today. It helps you get your message out to the world. The information lives online forever. Unlike yesterday's newspaper, that gets trashed, right? If you create content, the interest people, they come and visit your site and you can sell ad space on that page. Now, I know some people have said that blogging is dead and I kind of want to tell them that they're wrong, but of course, I don't.
13:15 Our blog has been a multi-million dollar blog for multiple years. There's a strategy behind it and that's the part that not everyone knows about. There are a few ways you can generate money off a blog. Number one, you get traffic to your site and you place ads on the side of your blog and those ad companies write you a check. The second one is you linked to the products that you're talking about to let's say another online store and you make a commission. It's called affiliate commission. Then the third one is you can actually sell products of your own. You can do one or you can do all three of them together. Now, when we first got started, we worked for pennies. No way. I think it was less than pennies. And in fact, I think we actually paid it to work for the first bit. It took us a few years before we started making noteworthy money and looking back on it, I think we could have gone faster had we have known what we know now, but we didn't.
14:16 So it was a little bit slower getting started. Now, why can you do this as a busy human? Well, this is the beautiful part. You can write out enough posts for a month and schedule them out. Yes, your blog can actually auto post them when you tell them to. So it's kinda like having an personal assistant. You're like, Hey, post this content in three days. Hey, post this content in a month and it's all set up for you. So if there's some chaos happening in your life, your business can still keep running. These posts live on forever unless you take them down. You put ads on the side and it generates cash for you 24 seven and you don't have to touch it. We actually have a bunch of amazing posts still generate traffic and we haven't touched them in years. You can also put links from other online stores like Amazon is a big one.
15:07 You can put them at the bottom of your post to generate additional revenue if your readers click and buy from them or this is the fun part. You can link it to your store or your product for your customers to buy what you have to offer and it's set up for years so you can just keep building and building and building and building is a fun way to share your ideas. Okay, so here's the truth about this style of business though it takes time. It takes time to build it before you can make cash off the blog itself. And it takes time for people to find your content and grow your following. It takes creativity to write up the blog posts. You have to be consistent with posting, but with every business you have to be consistent. And it's not like it's just one month of posting and the money comes flying in.
15:57 We're talking years of making money off ads and affiliate links. No, you can speed up this process greatly if you sell your own products. And I'd actually highly recommend if you go down this route, so you're not waiting for years for that money to come in. And the one is you have to coordinate posts with the appropriate shop links and then you're using social media heavily to get your content out to the world. Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest are an absolute must. And then you need to study something called SEO, search engine optimization. And that's a way for Google to find out what your content is about. Now I remember talking to a friend in the tech world when I first started about ways to make money from a blog and he told me that with the blog people come for free advice and if you randomly pitch your products to them and your followers are like, what's going on?
16:48 They can get annoyed cause they're not used to it. But if you tell them that's what's going to happen, then they're okay with it. So I kept thinking, what if I created something that allowed me to pitch my products every day so my customers knew what to expect. Not having to wait for a blog post to match a product or waiting for my social media to grow. That's when I started looking into eCommerce. I figured if old Navy, Amazon can have a site totally dedicated to selling and pitching every day that their customers knew it was going to happen, why couldn't I? So enter in eCommerce and yes, I may be a bit biased here because I believe that this is the fastest way to hit success online. When you first get started, whether your success is 1,010 thousand 100,000 or even a million or more. That's why I've been so focused on this with my students.
17:43 When someone asks me, Alison, what is the fastest way to make money online? I say e-commerce. I've hung out in this arena for almost nine years as shops. Owners. Yes, multiple shops. Let me tell you why I believe this. All right. I have a friend in the gym industry and his name is Alex and I lady came into his gym and said, Hey, I need to get in shape. I need to lose weight, and he said, great, it's $100 a month for the next three months, so $300 and this lady said, Oh, I just, I can't afford this. And a week later this self-proclaimed broke lady came back and laid out over $300 in vitamins and potions that she had just gotten at the G and C and asked him which one she should start taking every day. People put a value on products. She would've gotten much better results than the $300 in vitamins or minerals if she would have gone with Alex, but she didn't see the value in it.
18:49 People buy physical products because it invokes a feeling they can hold it, they can touch it. Remember the last time you bought your kid? The gift he'd always wanted. It was so fun to watch him freak out until you think's right. It's kind of an addictive feeling. We've even had to name it shopping therapy because of the endorphins. It releases in the brain. Some people shop when they're sad, excited, or any other feeling they might be feeling because people love to buy stuff and why shouldn't you be the one they buy it from? And a lot of people get freaked out in owning an online store because they think they have to invent a new product or spend a huge loads of money to buy inventory. Well, I'll tell you what, with all my products over the last 10 years, [inaudible] I've never had a new invention ever.
19:42 It's too risky for me developing something that I hope someone will buy, eh, I'd rather play a different game. I'd rather sell something that's already selling. It makes my job and my stress level go down. Three gagillion percent. K. Now note here, I'm not saying copying, I'm saying look for what is already selling. I sold cupcake liners and colored tape called washi tape. Those aren’t trademarked things. It's stuff that people needed and wanted. Then let's talk about having to have huge money to buy a lot of inventory to get started on my first eCommerce store, I sold leftover crafting supplies were headed to the trash, so let me bust this one out fast. No, you don't need to have a huge inventory to start. In fact, I highly discourage you from doing that. My pillows company, I spent a few hundred dollars to get the products and to get up and going.
20:36 This I am passionate about. Don't spend lots of money when you first get started, there is no need. I don't want you into that shopping therapy arena with your business. Yes, you can do whatever you want with them, money after you make it, but you don't need to spend the money just for the sake of spending money to start your business. Here's why it's great for busy humans. It gets you cash faster. You don't have to be creative trying to think of things to sell. You just sell what's already selling. You can set up an online store and it can take money for you. 24 seven it's kind of like having your own personal cashier and your site. Your site is yourselves person because it can explain the products to people. You can set up promotions around your schedule, so when my girls sold their scarves while they were in school, they work Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings.
21:32 When we went on vacation, they didn't schedule promotions when they had breaks off of school. They stack those promotions high and here's the truth about it though. If you build your store, they won't come. You got to get people to your site. But this is like all businesses, right? You don't have to have an audience, but you do have to get your products in front of them. You can use marketplaces and even influencers to talk about your products. For you. Inventory is a real thing. You have to watch your inventory. If you sell out, there are things that you can do, and I can talk about that in an upcoming episode and there's something called pre-selling and I actually really like that in the eCommerce world. Shipping, that's another thing, right? You've got to ship out, but I actually recommend hiring that out. Now I'm not talking drop shipping.
22:23 I'm talking about hiring a neighbor or even getting a fulfillment company. The third one that I'm going to talk about today is called course creation. This is where you teach someone online about something. You know you can do it with recorded videos or online class formats and there is a big buzz happening with this course creation right now. Tony Robbins and Dean Graziosi, Russell Brunson, Amy Porterfield, they've all broken the internet with their training on how to create a course. I can see why you create it and you're done. You add update support and you're good to go. Then you market the heck out of it. Now, the thing I'm noticing because it's a buzz right now, is there's an influx of people who are jumping in without the experience. I'm finding some that are, one-hit wonders and some that just read a book and claim to be the expert.
23:12 I've even heard of a gal coaching someone based off her experience of selling $1 million over 10 years and had little, very, very little money to even show for it because she didn't even know how to manage her business. She just left off the last two parts of her story. Don't do this for the love of humanity. I personally held off this route for a few years. First, I was super nervous to start putting my face out online because people can be really mean and I'm naturally an introvert. A commerce was comfortable for me because I could hide behind my computer. So here's why it's good for busy moms. Once you build it, you can sell it over and over and over. It's not a physical product so you don't have to ship anything. But I actually do ship to my students, but I like to ship them random surprise goodies.
24:08 But some of you know me well. I do things a little bit different in this space from the typical course creator and another reason why it is so good because it feels amazing. Helping people get to their goals. That is such a wonderful feeling. So here's the truth about this type of business. To start out course creation. You have to build the groundwork and lay the foundation. You have to help others recreate what you have done first to see if your process, the one you have done can actually be replicable for others. Before I even started, I tested my process on my daughters, my sister, my friends, some more friends before I even put mine out into the world. I needed to know that what I learned, someone else could replicate and I'm finding with this influx of online courses that some are skipping major steps.
25:10 Another thing, you have to be the face of your brand. I've seen some tried to do without their face and I've seen them really struggle. You're using social media heavily. You rely on Facebook ads to build up your audience and Facebook can come along one day and say they don't like your ads and not deliver them to anyone and even shut you down. It can be high emotions. You're helping people change their lives, right? Whether you're helping someone build their photography online business or helping them lose weight or even helping them live their best life, you've got to help them get through the dirty stages of whatever it is you're helping them to build. Now back to Joanna. I've seen both her and chip get wildly frustrated at this stage and you have to know how to balance that. Now the flip side of creating courses, let's talk about how I am a huge fan of buying online courses and online coaching.
26:13 It's one of the things I will continuously do forever. I've gotten results a lot faster from online courses and coaching than if I did it alone. But I do my research to make sure the person is legit and I urge you to do the same. Make sure the person has a proven and tested process and not a one-hit-wonder. Okay? Now I love all these business styles because they fit into my life and my schedule. So can I be biased on all three because I really do enjoy all of them. Okay, so this is what we talked about today. You need to build your house, invite people over, manage your growth, and with a summary like that, you'd think this would be some home decorating podcast, right?
