This isn’t the normal episode about how to grow your online shop and put more money in your pocket. Wait, what? Instead, I’m going to shimmy the curtain a little bit on my personal life and share with you what it's been like for my family to live 3,100+ miles (+ dog who acts like a cat) away on an island called Puerto Rico over the past year.
I’ll share some of the things we’ve loved, hated, struggled with, and some things that have blown us away about this little island that we now call home-sweat-home (not a misspelling…it’s hot here).
Read on for Our Truth of Living in Puerto Rico
Before we pulled the trigger and committed to moving to Puerto Rico, we asked our two girls and two boys what they thought about it. We expected a wide range of feedback but it was actually opposite from what we thought. Our teenage girls, who we thought would be against it, were actually on board with the idea right away. Our boys, however… that took some time. But, as we reflected on the morning of recording this episode with them, it became really clear that we made the right decision for our family. You’ll see what I mean as you get through this blog.
Things Are More Expensive In Puerto Rico
Of course, before moving we did some research on how things would be here. And during that, you’d always read about how much more expensive things are here in Puerto Rico versus in the mainland United States. So, we knew it was coming but it wasn’t until we got here and started buying that we realized how big of a difference it really is.
When Jared and I got the first electric bill, our jaws hit the floor. If there was an emoji that could show that, I’d insert that sucker here.
Despite only cooling the rooms in the house we used, the bill was still over $800 for a single month. Yikes! Now, thankfully this trend didn’t continue and we actually found out the solar panels on the house weren’t working correctly. Once we got those fixed the price came down to a reasonable $100. Phew!
Groceries were another thing with a much higher price tag. Back in Utah, we might pay somewhere between $2.50-3.50 for a gallon of milk. Here in Puerto Rico, that same gallon of milk will cost you $7.00-7.50. Yea, that’s like 3 times the cost. Unfortunately, we realized it’s not uncommon for things to be double or triple the price of what we would pay for them back in Utah. If you think about it though, it kind of makes sense. It’s a whole lot more difficult to get a gallon of milk to a little island in the middle of the ocean than it is to drive it down the highway.
Rent is another thing that’ll leave you with some sticker shock in Puerto Rico. We didn’t want to buy a house until we had experienced it and decided it was right for us and the kids. If you want to rent a relatively nice house, you can expect to pay between $4,000-10,000 per month. Again, yikes!
Things I LOVE about Puerto Rico
I have to start with the people. My new best friend is our 75-year-old neighbor who talks to me just about every time I go for a walk. I only understand a fraction of what he says, but I’m good with that.
Another thing that I’ve really been loving about the island that I didn’t expect is the pace of life. Things are just a little bit slower here (this also has some downsides that we’ll get into later).
I feel like when we were living in Utah, we were constantly running around from event to event to event and it seemed like we never got a break. You know what I mean?! While living here things have considerably slowed down and we have more time to relax, hang out as a family, and just be.
Now, if you come to Puerto Rico to live or visit, it doesn’ matter, you just have to experience the sweet bread. I could literally live off this stuff the rest of my life – it’s that dang good. I actually call it cupcake bread because that’s what I think when I eat it.
The vacationing aspect of Puerto Rico is also something you can’t not love! On the west side of the island, you can rent a place on the beach for $100-200 a night and if you looked at a similar place in Hawaii, you’d spend around $3,500! So you get all the beautiful views plus water that is actually warm for a fraction of the cost. Have I convinced ya to come on out?
Beaches, Bread, Best Friends?
Things That Are Different in Puerto Rico
Like I mentioned above, when we moved to Puerto Rico we thought we would just rent for a short period of time, see if we liked it, then make a commitment if we wanted to stay. Once we got settled in, we realized that we really like our free time on the weekend not having to work on the house. We can just go out and explore this awesome culture. Now, we have no plans on buying a house any time soon.
Whoa, this next one is a big one. Driving is a tad bit scarier here. The driving laws seem to just be more of a suggestion. The first time I saw someone take the off-ramp from the highway, stop, and turn around to get back on the highway, I thought it was surely a fluke. Nope. I’ve seen this several times at this point and it has me constantly white-knuckle driving all the time.
Some of The Annoying Things
Because of all the hurricanes that come through this part of the world, our houses have to be built like bunkers. I mean, these things are solid concrete. The walls are all thick concrete and the floors are either concrete or tile. All these hard surfaces means there is a ton of echo in the house. It’s not a huge deal until you decide to start a podcast. Then, the echo becomes your enemy. I’ve had to move my office three times, record under a blanket, and order multiple microphones – all because of this echo.
Okay, now let’s talk…water. The beach water is like floating in lukewarm bathtub water. No gasping through the shock of cold water! While that’s great for a swim in the ocean, it’s not great when the same temperature water is coming through the tap. This means we were going through ice like crazy and constantly running out until we went out and bought an ice maker to stop all the battles over the last cube of ice.
One thing that has been, well, not comfortable, is that the shower won’t get hot. For me, this is a big deal because I need to enjoy my showers since that’s where all the million-dollar ideas happen! You know what I mean – you stand there under that nice hot water and just ponder – then that lightbulb goes off. I can’t get those lightbulbs with luke-warm water. So, that led to yet another little addition to the house – a small instant water heater. That thing is ahhhhmazing!
The Things I Miss From Utah
The electricity. Such a basic thing that you are spoiled on when you live in the states and you don’t even think about it. It’s just a given that you have it. In Puerto Rico, it’s common that you’ll lose power. When you run an online business, electricity is kind of like the lifeblood of your business. It’s been something that has caused quite a bit of stress but I’m getting used to the consistently inconsistent power supply.
Some other things that I really miss about life back in Utah are…
- Dishwashers: yea, we don’t have one for some reason?
- Chick-Fil-A: need I say more?!
- Nail Salons that are quick: 30 minutes vs. 7 hours. Insert sad face here.
- Dry air: it’s soooo humid here in Puerto Rico.
My Big Takeaways From 1-Year Here In Puerto Rico
The biggest things I’ve learned from living in this island paradise, Puerto Rico, for the past year are…
You can be happy or miserable ANYWHERE. It doesn’t matter if you are living in a small town in Utah or an island like Puerto Rico, there is good and bad everywhere. I could make this same exact list comparing the pluses and minuses of living in Utah. It’s about picking out and focusing on the positives of where you are that matters.
Living in a place like Puerto Rico has also really opened the eyes of my kids and made them even more grateful than they already were. Being able to see another side of things has been really great for them. When we drive past a house that doesn’t have a roof and they ask “what do they do in the rain?”, we take that opportunity to talk about it. Then when we come home and they acknowledge that, yea we have a roof over our heads, it has them asking even more questions. They want to know how they can help those other families who aren’t fortunate enough to have a roof. So, not only are they seeing more of things outside of their bubble, but they are also wanting to serve more.
If you are ok with it, I’d like to challenge you with something?
I want to challenge you to find the good in things no matter where you are at or what you are experiencing.
You think you can do that?
One last thing. With all the craziness in the world right now, you need to really be focused on keeping your head screwed on straight. I know that can seem easier said than done on some days, but I wanted to share something that can definitely help. If you haven't listened to the previous episode on “tapping” then you should check that out right after this episode!
- Inspirationalby Greenwichound from United Kingdom
Some of things that Alison discusses in her podcast are really simple. But sometimes you need it laid out in these terms for it to just go in. And go in it does. Meaning you leave each episode full of confidence and aspiration with a check list of to do’s or things to try out. She shares information bombs that others in her position would never share (fear of giving away their secret sauce) and every step of the way you feel like she’s championing your specific journey. She is golden and this show should be in the library of everyone thinking or currently doing Ecommerce. Keep it up Alison! X

Loved this episode and how broken down and step by step the details were. Question for you: How do you decide on a business name and shop for an e-commerce store if you don’t have a niche? Or do you only recommend opening a store for those who do? In the beginning, you sold a lot of random things that didn’t relate to each other, so did you use third party selling websites to sell or did you start your own store and how do you do that without a specific product or niche?

- Hopeful:)by Polka. Lover from United States
So far I’m really excited about this podcast....and hoping it doesn’t all lead to what so many other podcasts I’ve listened to have, which is “I’ll tell you just enough to get you excited and start to believe you can do it, but to really start to change your life it’s time to pay for the membership/course and if you can’t afford it that’s just an excuse”. I’ve become a bit of a pessimist in the self-improvement journey while trying so hard to get started but not having much cash to do so. I’m that mom stuck living credit card payment to credit card payment which doesn’t exactly leave money to get started. I’m hoping this podcast is what I’ve been searching for to guide me on how to finally get something going that will bring hope and real change for my future. I love Allison and I have faith that she’s who can help me change my life!♥️

If you're looking to learn about building a successful online business, following your passion, and drive from a real person who practices what she preaches, this is the place! Alison is passionate about others successes- you can hear it in her voice. Against her norm of staying out of the spotlight and working behind the scenes Alison pushed past her fears of putting her face out there to follow her inner drive to teach others how she has been uber successful in several online businesses. She is still active in maintaining several online businesses and has taught me (and thousands more) how to build our own businesses. She is unselfish and wants success for all (and teaches how to do it without going into debt!). She gives so much to help others build their own dreams. Alison is the first mentor that I have found that doesn't hold back in sharing each piece to the complicated puzzle of successful business practices from idea to distribution to customer care. She doesn't promise magical overnight success- but gives you the keys you need and reminds you that your success depends on your dedication and hard work. - Info needs to be consistentby joness59 from United States
I missed that you mentioned the link to your bundle at the beginning of the podcast. At the end you mentioned the site is becauseicanlife.com/bundle. This is an invalid URL. I spent time trying to figure out the link until I saw it posted in the notes of your podcast. My feedback is to make sure the info you provide is consistent. Other than that it was a real good podcast. Hope this was helpful. Stephen Jones (your old Boise neighbor)

I’ve been following Alison for a while now. I bought into her 0-100K system. My store is up & running thanks to her & a lot of hard work. If you want to have an e-commerce business & have the best support team ever, look no further. I’ve done tons of webinars & online research. Nothing compares to what I have learned from Alison. Her online Facebook group is nothing short of phenomenal. You can post your struggle & ask for help. Five hours later, you come back to loads of encouraging posts from fellow “clanners” who have been there & they’re offering helpful advice. I have been in her course since May 2018 & have watched her course get better & better. That’s because she’s constantly adding to it. The best part about all of this is that Alison is genuine. She really wants to see her students succeed. This podcast is just another way to encourage us & all of you at the same time. I’ve met her in person more than once & her sincerity is more than evident. Sit back & enjoy the podcast! Better yet, take that jump & come join us in the Because I Can Clan!

So happy Alison has launched this podcast. So refreshing to find parent entrepreneurs who are crushing it in business but at the same time being REAL, TRANSPARENT, and VULNERABLE about what it's really like to build a business with a family (without sacrificing the family)! So many families out there are struggling working 9-5 or more and still unable to provide for their families. Alison's journey is a tremendous inpiration that it doesn't have to be like that and as a Entrepeneur myself I'm looking forward to some solid advice and tips through this podcast. Thank you Alison!!

- Alison Prince WALKS THE WALK Like No Other Person I Knowby Supreme Dragon Slayer 69 from United States
Full Disclosure. I met Alison and her amazing family just a few years ago and in that time I have witnessed an incredibly humble person step into even more of her greatness. This is someone who chases Impact over Significance in everything she does. In a world where most “big marketing gurus” who just yell louder to be heard and rely mostly on manufacturing celebrity to become a house hold name... Alison has been actually walking the walk for decades. She is family focused. She is heart centered. But make no mistake. She is one of the most BRILLIANT Marketers and Business Builders in the world. She had proven herself time and time again on her multiple businesses in multiple niches. All. From. The. Ground. Up. So yes. I know her. Which makes me qualified to write this review bc if you do have an opportunity to ever meet her in real life, feel good knowing she is the same in real life as she is on this podcast. Dave

So ready to listen to all these episodes.
You can be happy, and you can be miserable anywhere. You have to find the good because there's always going to be bad. Right? I could do this exact same list, finding out the expenses, the things that I love, things that are similar, really different, annoyances, misses, back in Utah. Right? I can do that exact same list over there as I can here.

Hey, this is Alison. Welcome to the Because I Can live podcast where if you've followed me for long, first off, thank you so much. You know that I talk about business. Right? I talk about ways to market, how to put more money in your pocket where it belongs. And if you're new to the podcast episode, I'm glad you're here. That's what I normally talk about. But today's episode is a little bit different. We're coming up on a year. A year of me, and my husband and I deciding to pack our stuff up, and move three bazillion miles away from our comfortable home in Utah, to a place called Puerto Rico. Now, I'm not gonna lie. Four years ago, I don't even think I knew where Puerto Rico was. So, this has been an absolute adventure for us coming down to a completely new space. And I want to tell you about some of the things that we've loved, some of the things that we've hated, some of the things that we've struggled through, and some of the things that we have been absolutely impressed with. So, you ready for this episode? Ah, I'm excited to give it to you.
Alright. Let me back this up a little bit before we actually come and I tell you about the island of Puerto Rico, and our experiences is when my husband and I were making this decision to come to Puerto Rico, we actually got our kids involved. And we said, "Hey, we're thinking about moving to Puerto Rico. What do you think about it?" And we got all sorts of reactions, as we should. We've got two teenage girls, and then we've got two little boys in elementary. And I thought the teenage girls were gonna say, "Absolutely not, our friends are here. No way, no way, no way. And they actually were the ones that said, "Heck, yes. We're totally in." And our little guys took a little bit more convincing, even for a little while. It took some convincing. And, we were talking about it this morning, about their thoughts of how they've come to Puerto Rico, and how they've been adjusting. And, my little guy, Lucas, told me the most amazing story, and I want to share it with you right now. So, we were out just walking around and I said, "Hey, you know when we moved to Puerto Rico. Tell me about that experience. How do you feel like moving to Puerto Rico has brought you closer to your heavenly father?" And, Lucas looked at me and said, "Mom, when we were on the plane moving to Puerto Rico, I actually said a prayer in my head about feeling good, because I didn't feel good. I didn't want to come to Puerto Rico. I wanted to stay in Kaysville. And after I said that prayer, I felt peace. And I knew that this was the right decision."
And, I'll tell you right now, the way this little boy was able to articulate his feelings about going into something scary, and then leaning on the Lord for help was such a humbling experience to me as a mom, to know that we actually made the right choice. Because - think about it. I'm dragging my children out of this comfortable place into an entirely new environment. Literally new environment. Utah's got mountains and pine trees. Puerto Rico has water and palm trees, like everything is going to be different. And I just... I have talked to Jared a lot about this. "Are we screwing them up? Are we screwing them up?" And, it's just too big of a change, can they handle it? What if they can't find friends? What if they end up hating us, right?" And then, as Jared and I started talking, we said, "Well, I guess we can screw them up in Utah, just as much as we can screw them up in Puerto Rico. So, why don't we learn to do hard things as a family, so that when the kids start to get older, and are experienced with hard things, or change, or adjustment, they know how the process goes." And so, after Luke told me that story today, I absolutely know that moving to Puerto Rico was the right choice. In the beginning, I was so unsure, after hearing that story, it solidified that our family is supposed to be in Puerto Rico.
Okay, so now what I want to do is I want to dig into some of the nitty gritties of living here in Puerto Rico, and I want to kick it off by talking about money. You know, I love talking about money, and some of the costs it requires to live here in Puerto Rico. Some of the expenses that we didn't even know was an issue. Okay, first one was a total shocker to us. That was when we opened up our first electricity bill. We heard that Puerto Rico had higher costs, but we didn't realize it's about three times the average of the state. So when we got our first bill of $800, Jared, and I just kind of looked at each other. And we're like, Whoa, that is a ton. And the crazier thing is, our house is about 300 square or sorry, 3000 square feet. And we only turned on the AC and the room that we were in, we didn't let it cool the entire home. It was just in the rooms that we were in so and the days they were all turned off upstairs and just in the living room and the kitchen and it was turned on, and then vice versa at night and it still came to $800. Now since then, there's actually some solar panels on the house and they weren't working. They weren't collecting and getting all the electricity where it supposed to go. We got that up, we got it working. So now our bill is around 80 to $100 a month. But we are so glad that we got house that has solar panel because $800 a month is kind of crazy. And another thing that we knew was going to be a little bit more expensive. Turned out to be a lot more expensive is the food. We went and got some gallons of milk and instead of them being what 253 50 in Utah, a gallon amount care as around seven to 750. So some of the stuffs double some of the stuffs third, just it's more expensive to eat here on the island, which of course would be right they have to bring it in a lot further than some of the places in the States. Another thing a little bit more expensive.
A little bit more expensive, is rent. So we decided to rent a home because we wanted to make sure we liked the island. We didn't know if we could commit to buying a home In a completely different place. Now, of course, renting a home is going to be, it's going to have so many variables, rooms, size, location, neighborhood, things like that, right? Same thing as the states. But it feels like here in Puerto Rico, there isn't any middle ground. It's either really, really cheap or really, really expensive. So some of the average rental places here you're looking at a condo for around 2500 homes are for to even $10,000 in the area that we are in. Alright, let's dive into some of the things that we have loved here on the island before I get into some of the things that I don't like about living here on the island. Number one thing of course, is the people here. The people are mind blowing our neighbors. Every time I go walking around our neighborhood, one guy will come out and say hi to me, and I feel like we're best friends. He told me the other day, who was 75 years old. So I've got a 75 year old best friend out here. And he's cheering me on all the time, usually on my phone talking, says hi to the people that I'm on the phone with. So we have really found the people here to be accepting and loving. We live in an area where there's a lot of entrepreneurs that have moved here from the States. And I'll tell you what, I have seen Jared blossom into this social butterfly. It's fun to see him get to know so many people here in our community. Another thing that this makes me so happy is it's less busy here in Utah, I felt like I was running from event to event to event like piano lessons, soccer band concerts, just non stop and here. It's quieter. There's not over scheduling, it's less busy and we can spend more time with the family and more time just being another thing that if you've ever been to the island Puerto Rico if you ever get a chance, one thing that you have to experience is the sweet bread here on the island. It looks like many French loaf breads. I call it cupcake bread. It is so good. I don't know the real name of it. If you know the name of it, let me know. But I'll tell you what, it is the best stuff in the entire world. I literally could live off cupcake bread, my entire life is so incredibly good. You just squish. It all melts in your mouth, the best stuff I've ever tasted. And another thing that I have loved here is that there's not a lot of vacationing here. When we go to the beaches.
It's not overcrowded, we've gone to places like Hawaii or California, and there's so many people. When we go to the west side of the island, I feel like it's almost like our own private Hawaii. And I love it over there. We can get a house on the beach, you open up the back doors And the water and beach are right there for about 150 to $180 a night, we looked at some of the prices in Hawaii, and we were finding similar properties for around 30 $500 a night. I love that Puerto Rico isn't marketed as much because things aren't as expensive. And in Puerto Rico you get warm water when you go into the ocean it's not like the shock of going into Hawaii water or California Water it almost feels like bathtub water and then some not all the beaches but there's a lot of beaches where the sand feels like powdered sugar and then there's no big sharks over here. Yes, there's no sharks but not big huge sharks.
You have to like I don't know, jaws scare yourself, freak yourself out about they don't have those over here. Alright, and a couple more things that I have loved his most people know English. And that has been really really convenient for people. like us who don't know any Spanish now I did learn some in eighth grade. But like, Yo quiero taco and don't de esta el nino, right? I want a taco and Where's the bathroom? some of the basics right? But the first month that we were here, we did have a waitress come up to us speaking in Spanish and we replied, Noblesse spaniel. So she brought her coworker over translating for us. And the lady said that our waitress was basically yelling at us. If we live here on the island, we better learn Spanish. And we told her we've just been here a month. Give us time we're trying we're trying. So that has been we are trying to learn Spanish, but we are grateful that most people do know English here. Another thing is the community that we live in the kids get to drive golf carts to school. You know what bridges smile, my 15 year old smile when she pulls out of the driveway, and a golf cart. ear to ear she loves it, although she hasn't been able to do it since school has been shut down for the rest of the year.
She kind of misses driving to school in that golf cart. Okay, some of the things that are very similar to the living in the states living in Utah to Puerto Rico is we still can get Amazon we have a lot of people say, Oh, no. Can you get anything shipped there? Yes, we can. Amazon shipped to us instead of today prime. It's seven days. So um, I had to get used to. I've missed quite a few holidays, because I keep thinking I will get here in a couple days. Well, it actually comes a week later. So the Fourth of July I think we celebrated on eighth of July, same Halloween. I think we celebrated the first weekend in November, you get the drift. Eventually I'll start remembering that it takes a bit longer for Amazon. But you know what, it's actually now I'm hearing from my friends all over the place. The Amazon is taking longer anyways. So I think that's just taken longer now. We have Walmart, Costco Sam's Club. We have pf chains have chains is about a 30 minute drive, but we've got quite a few similar shops here. Okay, what is really different about living on the island is I'm actually really loving living in a rental property. Instead of working on the house on the weekends, we get to go play on the island. I was kind of when we decided to move here with it being so new Jared, I knew we didn't want to buy a home. But we're like, what if we can or what if we want to in the future, but at this point we have decided not to, because not only do we like to play on the weekends and experience the culture and the food and the beaches here, we're noticing that a lot of our friends who did buy a home, it's taking them a long time to get things finished. When you have workers come in, things get delayed. They just don't seem at least ones we've worked with don't seem to have the urgency of getting things done. And so something that's supposed to take two days ends up lasting two weeks, some things that are supposed to take three days end up lasting three months. So the process just seems very, very slow and very frustrating. And we don't want to do that right now. It's not for us. Okay, another thing that's really different driving, wow, when we got here, I didn't drive for three months, because it's a little bit different out here. I think that the laws of driving are actually more of suggestions here in Puerto Rico. Alright, okay. So here's a couple examples. We're driving to Costco and I'm noticing a person get off the exit ramp, and then stop, turn around on the exit ramp and get back on the freeway. Like they had just gotten off the wrong ramp. And so they did a U turn to get back on the freeway. And I thought that was just
a fluke. But no, that happens. I I've seen it on a consistent basis. And so now that I'm driving, because I've gotten, I'm driving now, I kind of white knuckle it because I don't know what's going to happen. Things are a little bit a little bit unique, the fast lane here and the slow lane. That doesn't really happen you get people going 30 to 40 miles in the fast and in the slow lane, you get people going 80 to 100 miles an hour. So it's just all hands on deck when you're driving 100% concentration. Another thing when we're driving out of the Costco parking lot, this is the very first time we had gone to Costco where you drive up to the stoplight and we're sitting there waiting for the light to turn green. Well, I felt
Jared and I are sitting in the car and we look out the right and the left window and cars that were behind us are scooting up beside us and then turning in front of us so it was like we were stopped and the school of fish was coming humming around us to get to where they needed to go. And so we got stuck there for a while. And we've learned especially at that light, that you just stop, and then you go no matter what color the light is, or you'll be there for hours trying to figure out how to get through or waiting for the green light. We've just realized that a lot of the traffic laws here are suggestions. All right, now I want to dive into some of the annoying things about living here in Puerto Rico. Okay, first off this year, we have gotten hurricanes, earthquakes, viruses, but guess what, those are not unique to Puerto Rico, right. It's been unique to the prince family because we haven't had that stuff. But one thing, here's the positive, our homes are built like bunkers, which they're huge, solid concrete walls. We've got tile cement floors, and it has helped us to feel really safe. But oh my goodness, the amount of echoing that happens in this house is In saying I've had to move my office three times to get better audio, I've ordered three different mics, which Amazon wouldn't ship because I guess there's a battery in it or something. So I had to ship it to someone in Utah and then they shipped it to me which was like I said, annoyance, and while I was waiting for some of those microphones to happen, I had to do some podcast episodes under a blanket and I had to turn off the air conditioning. So I was like this hot sweaty mess Emory go doing a podcast under a blanket, not end of the world. I get that but like I said, just some of the annoyances of trying to get used to a home with huge echoes. All right, another one the water is Luke warm in Utah. I'm used to turning on the tap and it comes out really, really cold but here it's just kind of lukewarm. And so we go through ice like crazy. We did buy a little small icemaker so that it brought peace to the family because our freezer was going through. Like we just went Keep up on the ice so we bought a little icemaker which has brought family peace back to the prince home as we are not fighting over ice any more. Another thing is, like I said the waters lukewarm. So when you take a shower, it doesn't really warm up. Showers. I love thinking in the shower, I get my million dollar ideas in the shower and lukewarm water just doesn't cut it for me. So Jared spoiled me bought me this little small instant water heater and got it on Amazon for around $150. So we're back in business. I get to take the hot, thought provoking showers that I have always always loved. So glad that we were able to fix that one. Another annoyance that we didn't expect was restaurants. When we go to a restaurant. We're usually waiting two hours before the food comes. And so when the kids are like I'm starving, I'm starving. We say all right, we eat if we go to restaurant we need to bring you a snack because there's no way you're gonna make it another two hours. Or we eat a snack before we actually go to the restaurant. So we actually don't go to a ton of restaurants just because it takes a long time. Unless we can strategically plan for a two hour wait, I guess they'd like to talk? Well, I don't know. And then when you order, you know what, it's wrong a lot of the times, and so you're just trying to get the right order. It's just a little different. It's not as convenient as going to a restaurant back in Utah. When you say, hey, my water is empty, and they Hurry and fill it up for you here. Sometimes you have to ask him a couple times. Super, super sweet about it. There's just more wait time here. And then ask him a couple times and then at the end of your meal, they don't bring in your check. You have to ask for that check. So you can pay. That was something we had to learn. We sat for a long time before I was like, hey, maybe we need to ask them. Yes, they brought it we got out of there. It was all good. Another thing that we have to plan for is when we go to the bank, it's usually a two hour experience and that's if it's going pretty quick. So bless Jarrett's heart, he is the official bank runner. I sometimes wonder if I need to pack him snacks for the amount of time for him to go to the bank. It just take things just take longer. Like knocking out your to do list here just isn't a half a day type thing. You're looking at an entire week to get stuff done. Alright, another annoyance that I found is actually Yes, it was a complete annoyance, but it taught me so much gratitude in this experience. So I actually ended up in the ER out here. I had a raging fever. It was hard for me to breathe. And I just didn't not not feel good at all. So Jerry drove me to the local er here, and nobody knew English. So we were using Google Translate and using our you know, pointing To things and trying to explain the best that we could we call it finger language, not flipping off just finger language like pointing my chest in my head was on fire. And we were trying to explain to these people or to the ER what was going on. And they took me back to the back room laid me on one of the journeys, and the sheet was wet. So I have this fever on a wet sheet, the air conditioning is on, and I'm guessing was about 72. And so I'm just shaking, they don't have blankets, they don't have pillows. And we were in there for about eight hours for me to get some antibiotics and that there were some times I just had to close my eyes and go to my happy place.
Because back in the States, the ER close to us, I feel it's almost like this nice hotel room. And so the experience here, I look back at it now and just makes me count my blessings about what we had in the past and I don't plan to go to anymore er, I'm sure there's some great ones out here. But I don't want to go experience them. This was just a one off thing. We got the antibiotic, but one thing they were they came over with an IV, and they put IV in my arm. And then they started putting medicine in it. And I was like, Well, what are you putting in there? And he just kind of looked at me because he didn't know English. And he just started saying Pepsi. And I was like Pepsi. They're pumping me with Pepsi. And Jerry and I got the giggles at that point. And then the doctor finally came over who knew English which we're so grateful for that. She told us it was Pepcid. And I had heartburn really, really bad. So anyway, that was kind of an annoyance. I'm glad it wasn't anything too crazy. That would not be the ER I don't I don't think I'd necessarily want that. Er, again, good learning experience to help me to learn how great I had it back in The states. Alright, so now I want to dig into the missus the things that I miss. I think we go back to the last one and saying an ER that felt like a hotel room. I think it missed that for sure right.
Other things that I miss the power, the power goes on and off all the time here on the island when we had the earthquake early in 2020 the power was off for 24 hours, the generator didn't work. And I realized, oh my goodness, I mean, I need power. I need to cook I need to run my business. I need to use my phone. And so here the power goes on and off. I kind of like a consistent Power of Living in the States. Another one is dishwasher we don't have a dishwasher here. I don't know why. Maybe it's just this house but I'm as a dishwasher. I miss chick fil a. Another thing that I miss nail salons and hair salons they go quick I went to a nail salon first couple months when we got here, and it took seven hours to do my fingernails and toenails and I got cut six to eight times with their little emery board. She kept cutting me. And so I was a little bit nervous about that.
So I miss going into a nail salon where I get my nails done in 2030 minutes and get out of there. This it's a whole day experience that usually I don't have. So I've actually learned how to do my nails here. I say learn to do them but it still looks like a preschooler has done them. My family is good at making fun of me. Another thing that I miss is the dry air in the summer, the humidity in the summer, who it's heavy, it's like walking through soup. Sometimes you walk outside and you're instantly wet. So it's a lot different than the Utah air. Then the thing I have learned the most and I'll end with this is that you can be happy and you can be misery Any where you have to find the good because there's always going to be bad right? I could do this exact same list, finding out the expenses the things that I love things that are similar really different noises missus back in Utah, right I can do that exact same list over there as they can hear. But being able to pick out the positive all the things I loved like that cupcake bread. Oh my goodness, I never want to leave the island. I mean I do eventually but like that cupcake bread has made it all all worth it. Just kidding. There's a lot of other things but some of those things that you find the positive in every place every time you have to move or change you can find the positive. One of the other things that I've learned as I've watched my kids gratitude increase guess they've been pretty grateful kids their whole lives but coming out here, when we're driving around, and we're not Noticing. I mean, there's some houses that's out here that still don't have roofs from Hurricane Maria a couple years ago. And there's a big blue tarps over them. And we're driving around and it's raining. My,
my little guys look at me and they're like, Mom, there's no roof on that house. It's just a tarp. What are they doing all the rains coming in their house? How are they doing it? And so we talk about it, what do they do? But how do they get all that rain out of there? And then they come home and they look up and they're like, Mom, we have a roof. I'm so grateful we have a roof. And so coming out here has been a huge eye opening experience for them about the not all lives are like our life in Utah, that we can see other parts of the world. And then they have been thinking Mom, can we go help mom? How can we help these people? And so not only are they noticing the things that are different things that are outside of their bubble, they're also starting To think of how can we serve more, Mom, we have toys.
These guys don't even have a roof. How can we serve more? And so watching that has been very, very humbling on my end as a parent to be able to experience that. And like I said before, this year, making the decision about coming was scary. It was hard. It made me think, what if, what if? What if What if that now as the year comes to an end, I am so grateful that the Lord knows our journey so much more, and we can lean on him and ask him? Is this the right choice? Should we be doing this? And he can bless us with those little tiny voices? To say yes, no, this is the path. Yes, yes, yes. And wrapping up this last year, I know that we were supposed to be in Puerto Rico. The things we have learned is been amazing. And so I'm going to challenge you now listening to this podcast 2020 It is a change for everybody, right?
Everybody is going through this change through this hardship through this unknown. Through this whirlwind. I want you to find the silver lining, I want you to find the good.
